We had the good fortune of connecting with Evan Bergman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Evan, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I like to quote Bob Dylan “When you ain’t got nothing, you got nothing to lose” This sentiment removes the risk of failure. Emotional support from family and friends is also everything. I’ve had some hard cries but like dark clouds they pass because, ultimately when you come out from under the covers, there is usually a familiar face or sound that in some unknowable way makes you want to start the dream again.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to not have expectations. It’s very normal when one is starting out along the journey to try and figure out how things will connect to advance your career. But what time and experience ultimately tell you is that luck and timing play major roles in how and where you end up along the road of an artist. I started out planning to be a performer and found myself running a theater company. I avoided performing at my own company as not to have the optical that it was to advance myself. But having worked behind the scenes producing and working with playwrights on their script unexpectedly led me to directing.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well as a native New Yorker what intrigues me most about LA is its varied landscapes. First thing in that AM is a long walk or run up in the rugged wilderness of Griffith Park. Then I like to go to one many old-school breakfast places like Kings Road or the Silver Spoon diner. Whether it’s driving through the hills or going west on the PCH I’m always discovering something new. It also helps I’m not in a rush as most people are to get to work or home. I know this sounds sacrilegious, but traffic doesn’t bother me. In New York people watching is best on a subway, but I get as much enjoyment watching people in their cars when driving around LA.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
New Jersey Rep has been my artistic home for the past 10 years. They have a had a profound impact on my artistic career by giving me many opportunities to direct new plays for a wide variety of playwrights. Telling stories is my main objective and, whether on a stage or a film set, my job is to capture the intimate process of the actors’ performance. Having directed over 15 plays for NJ Rep, and the many other jobs I’ve had, allows me to continually strengthen my skills.
