Meet Evan Deng | Founder / Director of Family Video Store™

We had the good fortune of connecting with Evan Deng and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Evan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started Family Video Store™ in 2022 as a creative collective for artists & storytellers representing black, indigenous, queer & Asian creatives within the film, music & entertainment industry. Although the landscape of Hollywood is slowly shifting, it’s important to continue demanding diversity, equal representation, and increased visibility for BIPOC filmmakers.
Through our marketing, newsletters, and assortment of music videos over the years, Family Video Store™ is bridging the gap between industry gatekeepers and music / film independents.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I was born on Pearl Harbor Day on December 7, 1999 in Red Bank, New Jersey, a theater district about an hour’s commute from Manhattan.
My mother Ling and father Yuming immigrated from China in the late 1990s and are both software engineers. Despite their discouragement, I began producing and editing YouTube videos, skits, and short films with friends from local Chinese schools and churches from an early age.
My passion for filmmaking continued into my undergraduate years at the University of Michigan, where I was Vice President of Filmic, a student-led video commercial agency based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. While pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Film, Television, and Media, I volunteered for Wolverine Pathways, a university-sponsored program granting underprivileged students equal access to filmmaking resources within the Metro Detroit area.
My first music video, “Muchuu” by Mei Semones, was published on YouTube in early 2022. Mei and I continued our collaboration in producing a series of music videos for “Yoake” and “Kemono” off of Mei Semones’ debut EP, “Tsukino.” Promoting our music videos through TikTok, Instagram, and viral marketing, I began working as a videographer and social media coordinator for the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, Queens.
In September 2022, INJI released the music video to “Madeline” via Polydor Records.
Following the success of “Muchuu” and “Madeline,” I officially founded Family Video Store™ as a creative collective of artists and storytellers representing black, indigenous, queer & Asian creatives within Hollywood. In early 2025, Family Video Store filed for an official trademark and elected S-Corp status.
Gaining attention within New York City’s underground hyperpop scene, I began working with artists including Alice Longyu Gao, Namasenda, Sophie Cates, 8485, Fish Narc, Ravenna Golden, Babebee, Dafna, River Moon, Sebii, and more. As Family Video Store™ expanded, I began producing and directing music videos for major record labels such as Robbins Entertainment and Epitaph Records, founded by Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz.
In addition, I’ve made cameo appearances in music videos for artists including Jess Glynne, Twenty One Pilots, and Lil Mabu.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My perfect date would start with a cappuccino at Fellini Coffee. I’m an avid reader, so bring a good book. After coffee, we’d head straight to Anthology Film Archives, an independent repertory theater founded by the late Jonas Mekas. There’s no better place to watch avant-garde cinema in 35mm or analog form.
For lunch, we’d grab sushi and hand-rolls at Michelin-starred Maki Kosaka in the Flatiron district. You’ll get to sweat a little with a game of pickup basketball with the Chinese Basketball Club, a creative space for artist-hoopers based in Seward Park. Cool off with a glass of champagne at the Metrograph commissary and end the night at the Roxy Hotel with dinner and a movie.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
