We had the good fortune of connecting with Eztli Amaya and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Eztli, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Our group, fifth sun project is a grassroots organization that does community work in Las Vegas, which is Native land of the southern Paiute – Nuwuvi people. We started this group to keep accountability of being informed about social, environmental, cultural and political issues, working with our community to create a space where artists and activists can merge their concerns and ideas for events held locally.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Our group would be classified as an organization a majority of the time, but we’d like to be more recognized as an “artivist” collective- organizing through art and activism. There are three of us that founded the group, and each one of us has an artistic skill that uplifts the work that we do. I think bringing art into the mix of organizing, has been both challenging and exciting at the same time. Using both skills/view points while working with a timeline is the challenging part, as organizing is very precise and fast pace and art is created at a whole different rhythm. Bringing in other local artists and organizers to work with on a project has probably been the most humbling and impactful way of leading movement in our spaces.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In Vegas – supporting local business and highlighting local efforts is first priority.

The solidarity fridge – a community fridge, pantry, garden, lil library, and safe space to gather in a neighborhood in East LV, providing mutual aid

Arts district downtown- various shops, galleries, venues with events organized every weekend.

Nuwu Art Studio- Indigenous led /POC owned art and activism space showcasing various artists and organizations

Broad acres swapmeet- the one and only – support our brown communities and have fun with the culture

Food:
Any Mexican street food in east LV and north town

Chef Louie & Soy Mexican – best vegan mx food in town

Naliis Báá & Yaqui Zen – Indigenous women owned pop up vendors

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Like to shoutout @Rick.rl , work partner, partner in crime, good friend, and huge supporter – not only of Fifth Sun, but of our community. Rick has been there for a lot of us, helping document our efforts in empowering and creating movement with our people. His work and efforts deserve all the shout outs!
