Meet Fedella Lizeth | Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Fedella Lizeth and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Fedella, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
First off, simply saying yes to the reoccurring thought of “Should I bring my camera?” when headed out to something whether it be an event, a friend link up, or even an errand run. I realize that if this question were to cross my mind, than it’s almost a spiritual hunch telling me, “Do it.” and even more so perhaps, leading me to make artistic decisions even in the mundane and not just your regularly programmed artistic projects. Whenever I hear my friends announce in regret, “Dang! I should’ve brought my camera!” I always tell them what I would have told myself, “Next time, if you think about it, do it”.
I also have been very attentive to the speed of which I am creating work and who I am creating work for. I feel over the years I have gone through volumes of producing work for me and then producing work for an audience as if I might lose my touch or support when I am tending to other things in my life. I think most artists in this age go through this sort of pressure with the overbearing relevance of social media and one’s success. However, I am growing into a “In order for an artist to make art (or for me, a photographer to take a photo) they must live their life”. How else can we produce something without experiencing the ups and downs of life? Or have the yearning to express something whether it be a concept, an emotion, or simply a place in time without a personal experience and intention behind it?
Film photography gives me the ability to live in slow motion. And when it is that I pick up my camera, I know what I want to capture, who I want to celebrate, and document what matters most to me.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am really most proud of how community centered my photographic work has become. While I have desires to pursue certain artistic concepts within my photography, and I do, a lot of my work has to do with my adoration and personal celebration of those around me wherever I go. You can notice this in my portraiture. My perspectives within my photographic work showcase my fascination with the true authenticity of everyday life, community, and multicultural perspectives and influences in what is one of the country’s most significant cities neighboring the U.S./Mex. border. I have been published in works such as the contemporary archival book, La Tierra Mia, as well as have been interviewed for ABC10, “Latin In America” and for the San Diego Union Tribune, “A New View of Home: Fedella Lizeth rediscovers her love for her native San Diego” . My passions have created a deep sense of pride and adoration for my community. With a camera in hand, I aim to document aspects of local culture typically in marginalized communities that often go unrecognized in mainstream media.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I can confidently say that both my friends and family have provided me with the most wondrous support since my journey has become more formative. A big amount of support comes from my chosen family, that includes not only my closest friends but as well as others in my community that I am able to ask for help, look for inspiration, or join in on creating meaningful projects. For example, a group of close friends and myself have taken initiative to create a collective called the “619GURLZ” where we are uprooting, promoting, and celebrating each other’s artistic endeavors whether that be photography, multimedia work, or even musical opportunities. It is also important for us to celebrate and uplift other artists in our city whether that is through our. art or by hosting events that allows for everyone to feel included. To me, it feels like we are building a sense of family in the art and music community here in San Diego.
