0We had the good fortune of connecting with Fely Tchaco and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Fely, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Since childhood, I have known that I am a creative individual. I focused on and appreciated beautiful objects and people. I began drawing and painting at an early age. In fifth grade, I told my father that I wanted to become a singer because I had a dream in which I was performing on television. My father did not take me seriously and really laughed at me! I would say maybe the creative path chose me instead!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Raised in an environment where education is considered a luxury and a privilege, especially for young girls, I have come a long way. If you are not fortunate enough to attend school, you are left with very little, vulnerable to human trafficking and predators.

I consider myself to be someone who values education, yet I have had numerous opportunities to further my education stolen from me because of situations I won’t get into here. If not, I’ll be working on a novel.

My goals upon moving to California were to pursue more education and achieve financial independence.  Not only did I face many obstacles as a single mother, but I also endured a terrible, traumatic situation. I was unable to concentrate in school, and I was unable to hold down a job. I was insecure and always judged myself.

One day, I took a moment to reflect on where I came from and where I am now. I needed to take action and locate a solution to my issue. I then decided to continue my education by enrolling at the City College of San Francisco. My English was very weak; I was extremely confused and had difficulty choosing a major. I initially studied fashion design, then switched to graphic communication.

Despite the fact that I still have a ways to go, I have decided to resume my music practice. In 2004, I founded my own independent record label and released my debut album in the United States, De Zeregnan. I have released three additional albums to date: Awareness, Maturity, and most recently, YITA.

Along my voyage, I established African Arts Academy (R), a trademarked international performing arts and education organization specializing in the doctrines of African and African diasporic arts and crafts. I’m also the founder and executive producer of San Francisco Modern Ethnic Fashion Week (MODEFA SF). It is a festival of ethnic beauty, excellence, and celebration held during the week of Juneteenth and International Ethnic Day and is voted the finest fashion show in San Francisco.

Regarding your vision, I’ve learned that you can never depend on anyone but yourself. People will come and go, but you must remain dedicated to your vision and mission. Your brand will become recognizable as you grow and become more established. Why? Never give up due to your effort, perseverance, tenacity, and endurance.

Despite obstacles and setbacks, my accomplishment is one of the things I am most proud of today. I had to reset my life multiple times without giving up and maintain my focus on improving myself.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am fortunate to reside in one of the most renowned states in the United States. California is renowned for its stunning natural landscapes and possesses a plethora of attractions and amenities. When hosting guests, I am inclined to guide them to the Sierra’s National Parks, encompassing Yosemite, and facilitate their visitation of the Golden Gate Bridge, either by driving or walking.

Transport them to the city of Los Angeles, where they can partake in a visit to the renowned Universal Studios and explore the Garment District. Escort them to the picturesque coastal shores and majestic mountain ranges; our region boasts a diverse array of natural wonders.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to thank God first and my parents, who brought me into this world and have done everything they could to care for me and motivate me despite adversity, especially my grandmother. I grew up without a mother, and was raised by a single father with two other siblings. One thing I remember is that my father was impressed by my artistic talent and constantly encouraged me to pursue it. Although dad had no idea I was interested in singing, I would like to thank everyone I’ve met along the way who has been supportive of my aspirations. I never had a mentor, but I have individuals who support and admire me for what I do and who I am.
