We had the good fortune of connecting with Fernanda Romero and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Fernanda, what role has risk played in your life or career?
is everything my motto in life is you only live once. There is no growth if you don’t get out of your comfort zone.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Well, coming from Mexico City to study fashion design and merchandising, I started a company with an ex of mine called Rock and Republic. It began to be successful very quickly. Initially, I wasn’t really interested in being in front of the camera; I enjoyed dressing people for their red carpet events and celebrating their success. It wasn’t until I was discovered by a modeling agency that saw my pictures modeling my own clothes that I considered being in front of the camera. At that point in my life, I thought, “Why not?” I needed the extra money and wanted to be more independent from my parents. Doors started to open for me, and it felt like the universe was trying to tell me something. I began booking jobs right away, and the best part was that I was enjoying it.
I had always loved acting, but I never saw it as a career. Growing up, I was always involved in theater or doing sketches. I’ll never forget when a friend of mine, Apolo, told me in 4th grade, “You are born for this. You should be an actress.” However, I never seriously considered it until years later when my destiny led me to Los Angeles.
I won’t lie, after I began taking acting seriously, I learned so much about myself and also how to stay active and positive. I also started to branch out and be more creative in other areas of my life for my own sanity. Mental health for actors is something we sometimes don’t talk about, but it’s crucial. We are often facing rejection, and we have to be okay with it and move on. I learned this much later, after I became a mom, and realized that not everything in life is like walking a red carpet or booking every single job. Sometimes you get it, and sometimes you don’t, and you can’t take things personally. The show must go on.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Wow, this is a tough one… Okay, I love hiking in Topanga Canyon. I also adore Ojai; it’s one of my favorite getaways. On Sundays, you can catch the farmers’ market there.
In the city, I would say I enjoy Soho House; it always has a good ambiance. Santo Sushi La Antic de Michelle and Chateau Marmont are nice for a little dinner, as is Little Door. Also, Palm Springs is a great escape, especially if you stay at the Parker; it’s always so beautiful and guarantees a relaxing weekend.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Oh my goodness! There were so many people who believed in me when I was starting out and decided to take a chance and stay in the US. People like Blanca Valdez, a great casting director who gave me my big break. My first-ever manager, Eric Black, at Anonymous Content. Antonio Cupo, for helping me take my craft seriously. Kent Ross, for his love and unconditional support, and for believing in my talent and encouraging me to pursue my dreams. Amy Lyndon, for her honesty and courage in helping me understand my craft. And all my friends who became my family in the States.
