We had the good fortune of connecting with Fiorella (Lingxue) Xiao and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Fiorella (Lingxue), can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
Originating in the captivating landscapes of Henan, China, I’m a designer whose roots run deep, influenced by a heritage that cherishes both history and artistry. My journey across continents – from China to Italy and finally to the creative hub of Los Angeles – has sculpted me into a versatile designer, blending diverse aesthetics, cultural insights, and business acumen.

My childhood in Henan, a region steeped in China’s legacy, was a tapestry woven with threads of design passion. With an interior designer father and a mother who worked for our local history museum, my earliest aspirations were set on the path of creativity. Those early influences sparked my desire to craft spaces that tell stories and evoke emotions.

Leaping into the world of design, I followed my curiosity to Milan, where design and fashion intermingle seamlessly. This chapter infused my style with a touch of timeless sophistication and contemporary flair. Five years of immersion in Milan’s artistic vibes deepened my design prowess, yet the allure of new horizons drew me to the vibrant landscape of Los Angeles.

Crossing oceans once more, I embraced the creative dynamism of LA while pursuing advanced studies. Today, I stand as an accomplished interior and product designer, a testament to my global journey. Seamlessly blending Eastern heritage, European finesse, and American innovation, my designs resonate with a narrative that transcends borders and epochs.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Presently, I thrive as a product designer nestled within the vibrant pulse of Los Angeles. My passion revolves around crafting captivating products that effortlessly marry visual allure with meticulous craftsmanship. With an innate flair for aesthetics and an unwavering focus on intricate product nuances, I proudly contribute as an integral member of the Kelly Wearstler Studio team.

My trajectory to this point has been a journey of dedication and perseverance. Joining the ranks of this world-renowned design studio, celebrated for Kelly’s distinctive taste and our projects’ multi-layered, sensory-rich experiences, was a culmination of years of hard work. I embarked on this path during the challenging times of the Covid era, an unforeseen obstacle that ignited my resilience.

Beginning with an internship, I gradually carved my niche within the industry. Today, my design portfolio boasts multiple creations gracing the market. Yet, the road was far from smooth. Overcoming the hurdles demanded a tenacious commitment to continuous learning. I gleaned insights not just from textbooks or tutorials, but from interactions with people, the tapestry of life experiences, and the crucible of challenges themselves.

The lessons I’ve gathered along the way are invaluable. I’ve learned that growth often emerges from adversity, and that innovation flourishes when nurtured by an unquenchable curiosity. Every setback is an opportunity to reevaluate and recalibrate, ultimately sculpting a sharper, more resilient professional profile.

My story underscores the power of perseverance and the significance of pushing boundaries. It symbolizes a journey marked by seizing opportunities, even amidst uncertainty. As I continue on this creative voyage, I strive to instill in the world a reminder that greatness can emerge from humble beginnings, and that the pursuit of knowledge is an enduring compass guiding us through the dynamic landscapes of design and life.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When it comes to giving my best friend an unforgettable LA experience, I’d ensure they dive into the best of what the city offers. We’d start with a laid-back escapade in Pasadena Old Town, my go-to place. Having called this area home for three years, I can vouch for its charm and relaxed vibe. The weather is reliably fantastic, setting the stage for a perfect getaway.

From there, the options are limitless. If beach vibes are calling, we’d hit the sands of Santa Monica or Venice Beach, soaking up the sun and sea. The allure of the mountains is just as enticing, and within an hour’s drive, we’d find ourselves surrounded by the majestic landscapes of the San Gabriel Mountains.

Our dining adventures would be a blend of local favorites and hidden gems. From trendy eateries in West Hollywood to iconic food trucks in various neighborhoods, LA’s culinary scene has something for every palate. Of course, we’d indulge in some In-N-Out Burger, a quintessential LA experience.

When it comes to exploration, LA’s cultural offerings would take center stage. We’d visit the Getty Center for art and architecture that leaves us awe-inspired. Taking in a Hollywood movie at an iconic theater is a must, as is strolling through the historic streets of Downtown LA, discovering its vibrant arts scene and eclectic markets.

In a nutshell, my friend’s LA journey would be a blend of relaxation, culinary delight, cultural exploration, and nightlife adventure. It’s a city that embraces diversity, offers boundless opportunities for discovery, and promises memories that will linger long after the trip ends.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
