We had the good fortune of connecting with Floyd Marshall and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Floyd, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
In order to succeed at any level you must take risks. Things have to get very uncomfortable which signals growth. If you’re going into a new endeavor and your attitude and demeanor is one of calm and comfort, you’re not stretching yourself enough. Taking risks have put me where I am right now in my career. Asking for an interview, putting myself in front of people. Doing things that made me scared and nervous, but doing it anyway.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I do multiple things, I have a virtual film festival, The Film Collective, I also have a internationally ranked podcast, A Conversation With Floyd Marshall Jr. I’m a founding member of Men Of Color Unite. That’s an organization geared toward mentoring men of color in the film industry. I’m also a mentor for Women of Color Unite where I had the honor and privilege of mentoring young black females in the entertainment industry. I’m also a board member of Philadelphia Philm Phactory and I’m a film judge for the Detroit Black Film Festival. I’m also starting my coaching business and I’m about to release a book on filmmaking. What excites me most is serving people. Everything that I just laid out has service at the heart of it. I truly believe by helping others you help yourself. It definitely wasn’t easy and took years to get to this stage professionally. I think what sets me apart is my drive and commitment to excellence which is something I’ll always be chasing.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well of course with this being Philadelphia you would need to take them to get a good cheesesteak and of course a pretzel. There are a few really good spots throughout Philadelphia for a great cheesesteak. Now if we’re going upscale I’m taking them to Capital Grille or Mortons or Ocean Prime to name a few. I’m a big foodie so that’s what I’d concentrate on. If we’re talking shopping we’re definitely hitting the King of Prussia Mall. It’s a little pricey, but well worth the money. I don’t hang out much in clubs anymore so a happy hour at one of the aforementioned places or a cigar bar would be a destination.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to shout out my wife Tracy Marshall and my daughters Alaina and Erin Marshall. They’re my inspiration and they also keep me grounded.
