Meet Fran Krause | Animator, Professor, Comic Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Fran Krause and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Fran, we’d love to hear more about your end-goal, professionally.
Dead!
I mean, ideally my career will be something I can enjoy for my whole life, and something that can be continually challenging through the years.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m glad that I’ve been able to work in a few different disciplines over the years. I started off in preschool animation, but shifted into commercial and documentary animation, which was a good excuse to learn new things. When I started teaching, I enjoyed trying to find ways to communicate the concepts that were helpful to be while working as an animator. Since I started teaching with a few part-time adjunct positions, I often didn’t have a ton of time to plan classes, so I’d bring a bag of art supplies with me and usually try to figure out what I could teach each week with limited supplies. It was difficult at times, but the time constraints made it exciting and challenging.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, I think I’d have to take them to Pantry House and have some pancakes at one in the morning. Best pancakes in town, and excellent people watching! The next day, maybe a day at the Huntington Garden? I miss the tea service they were doing during the lockdown, but the gardens are a lovely place to draw and read.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I think the ASIFA New York animation organization was really helpful as I was fresh out of RISD and starting out in the animation industry. It’s easy to feel alone once you’re out of college, and it’s hard to feel motivated at times when you’re not surrounded by other artists working on projects. Having a place to share work and stories was really wonderful.
