We had the good fortune of connecting with Freise Brothers and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Freise Brothers, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think anyone who has been able to make a career in the production world has founded a good part of their lives on taking risks. Obviously it’s a very cutthroat industry with so many talented people out there that you are constantly competing against, so landing each gig is a feat in and of itself. We have to be willing to continually put ourselves out there to both get & keep the work. Ad agencies are always looking for something fresh, so we have to be our own brand. We are constantly selling ourselves in ways that are specific to client visions but also in ways that prove that our past experiences & knowledge can be relied on. This way of working is a wild roller coaster, as the jobs & clients are constantly coming and going. We are fortunate that our path, for the most part, has continued to support us and keeps us doing what we love to do. We are very lucky in that sense.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Ultimately becoming commercial directors, I think we were looking for a career where we felt in control of our futures, both as artists and as professionals. We were always told when we were young “Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life!” I think like many Xennials, we took this to heart and did our damndest to make it happen. Architecture felt like a good balance of our passion & skills, so at first we ended up in large offices, doing meticulous work. On one hand, our time spent in these studios made it clear that it wasn’t the right environment for us personally to thrive in, but on the other, our time there was a great boot camp in time management and self-motivation. We were really into computer animation and started making our own personal video projects and spec ads in our free time. At times our jobs demanded 80 hour work weeks, so it was a crazy time. We eventually started sharing our side hustle work with commercial production companies & caught traction. Once we learned the ropes, we set up our own business to handle both the production and post-production of most of our directorial work.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The free comedy shows on Wednesday nights at the Townhouse in Venice are always a hit. You never know who’s coming next and I’ve rarely seen a bad act. The whisky sours are also top notch.
