Meet Frey Su

We had the good fortune of connecting with Frey Su and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Frey, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
My decision to pursue a career as an artist stems from a deep-seated desire to benefit society and help people through my passion. Art has been an inseparable part of my life since I started learning and engaging with it at the age of five. For a long time, I was uncertain whether to make art my profession. The countless stories of people who turned their dreams into jobs only to end up disillusioned and unhappy filled me with doubt and fear. However, I managed to overcome these negative emotions by taking the first step towards trying. I embarked on various internships, and through these experiences, I realized that only by doing what I love could I become an inexhaustible source of energy. This passion drives me to keep moving forward, continuously striving for improvement.
My artwork focuses on themes of humanity, morality, meditation, and spiritual healing. Through immersive scenes, my work acts as transcendental gateways, inviting viewers into spiritual realms, unlocking memories, and fostering shared soulful experiences. I hope that people can experience a moment of healing, through my art. To further this mission, I collaborate with yoga instructors, meditation practitioners, and educational institutions to create free events and solo exhibitions that promote physical and mental well-being. Through these efforts, I aim to offer solace and healing to both body and soul.
You might wonder, “Why help people?” Yes, my dream is to help others. We often witness injustice and darkness in the world, especially in today’s climate of global turmoil, frequent diseases, and economic hardships. Such an environment breeds unrest and negativity. Our society is composed of countless groups, each made up of individuals. When tackling large-scale societal issues seems overwhelming, we can start by addressing individual needs. A society of countless healed individuals forms healthy communities, and numerous healthy communities can illuminate the world.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art with a degree in General Fine Arts in May 2024. As I approached graduation, I set a clear goal: my senior thesis project wasn’t just an art piece but a crucial step from academia into the professional art world. This project, titled Inner Meditation, is an interactive art installation that features six artworks arranged in an orbit-like layout, with a central piece as the focal point. It represents five microcosmic sensations and their connection to the universal macrocosm. The installation blends traditional paintings, sculptures, lighting, sound, and immersive experiences, offering a tranquil and healing experience. The dynamic 3D effects created by changing lighting, the mirrored floor reflecting transcendental meditation, and the hanging work capturing the meditative world, all contribute to an intimate journey for viewers.
Creating this project was both challenging and rewarding. I meticulously planned every detail, from designing the pieces to arranging the exhibition space and printing promotional materials. The process was intense but incredibly fulfilling. The outcome exceeded my expectations, earning recognition and collaboration invitations from fellow artists.
Post-graduation, my real journey began. I spent two days organizing a comprehensive list of Baltimore galleries, detailing their names, opening hours, artistic philosophies, and contact information. I sent a formal intent letter to each gallery, expressing my interest in job opportunities and my intention to hold an exhibition featuring my thesis project. I then dedicated four days to visiting these galleries. It was a whirlwind of memories. I recall the sweltering heat while rushing between different galleries, the chilling air conditioning indoors, sore toes, and heavy breaths. But each encounter, whether yielding useful information or not, contributed to a fuller understanding of Baltimore’s art scene. This effort paid off when MAXgallery offered me opportunities for both a group show in September and the use of the Inner Meditation as a solo exhibition from October to November.
In addition to gallery work, I’ve immersed myself in various volunteer roles, such as serving on grant jury panels and designing window displays. During this process, I received recognition from many galleries and art organizations, participated in official interviews, and secured an opportunity to work with the Baltimore Museum of Art. These experiences have deepened my understanding of the art world and reinforced my belief that helping others with sincerity opens doors to unexpected opportunities. These past few months have taught me that opportunities are like gifts scattered randomly around. The more I keep moving, exploring, and working hard, the greater my chances of finding these gifts. Stay at home, and I’ll find the gifts are few and far between.
Looking ahead, I remain focused and optimistic. My guiding principle is to act altruistically without compromising my goals or values. The journey is just beginning, and I am excited about what lies ahead. Embracing every experience with an open heart, I believe that true success comes from genuine connection and perseverance.
“With Inherent completeness, Tranquility is found in action.”
”Do good deeds, and let the future unfold as it may.“

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Day 1: Arrival and Art Extravaganza After picking up my friend from the airport, we’ll have a brief rest to recharge. Our first stop will be the Baltimore Museum of Art, the largest museum in the city. We’ll spend the afternoon exploring its vast collection, from contemporary masterpieces to ancient artifacts, soaking in the rich artistic heritage. Dinner will be at the nearby Gertrude’s Chesapeake Kitchen, where we can enjoy some delicious local cuisine while discussing the art we saw.
Day 2: Underwater Wonders and Harbor Fun
The next day, we’ll head to the National Aquarium, Maryland’s largest aquarium located at the Inner Harbor. The highlight will undoubtedly be the mesmerizing Shark Alley. After our adventure, we’ll take to the water above ground, renting a speedboat or paddleboat. With drinks in hand, we’ll cruise around the harbor, enjoying the sea breeze, good music, and the beautiful sunset.
Day 3: Local Art Scene
Baltimore’s local art scene is vibrant and ever-changing, so I’ll search for interesting art events or exhibitions happening around town. Whether it’s a quirky gallery opening, an outdoor art fair, or a live performance, we’ll immerse ourselves in the creative spirit that defines this city. Lunch will be at a trendy spot like Artifact Coffee, where we can enjoy artisanal bites in a cozy atmosphere.
Days 4 and 5: Nature Escapes
To balance our urban adventures, we’ll spend the next two days exploring the natural beauty around Baltimore. Meadows Park is first on our list, offering lush landscapes and diverse wildlife perfect for a relaxing day out. We might spot deer, birds, and other critters while hiking its trails. The following day, we’ll head to South West Area Park for some fishing. Whether we catch anything or not, the peaceful surroundings and time spent outdoors will be refreshing.
Day 6: Farewell and Reflect
On the sixth day, it’ll be time to bid farewell to my friend. We’ll have a hearty breakfast at a charming café like Blue Moon Café, famous for its Cap’n Crunch French toast. After reminiscing about our week’s adventures, I’ll see them off, hoping they leave with wonderful memories of Baltimore.
Day 7: Rest and Reset
Finally, the seventh day will be a day of rest for me, giving me time to recharge and reflect on the fantastic week we had. I’ll take it easy, perhaps revisiting some favorite spots or simply relaxing at home, ready to start a new week with renewed energy.
Baltimore is a city brimming with excitement, culture, and natural beauty, and I’m sure my friend will leave with a newfound love for this incredible place.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to my alma mater, Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). MICA has been like a nurturing mother, never rushing us to chase after material success, but instead encouraging us to grow holistically in a professional and inclusive artistic environment. The institution genuinely cares about our well-being, whether it’s ensuring we have enough to eat and wear, that our professors treat us well, that our courses are beneficial, and most importantly, that we are happy and developing well-rounded personalities. I love and appreciate MICA deeply. At MICA, I encountered numerous amazing professors and staff who have played a pivotal role in my growth. Rene Trevino, James Williams II, Karen Warshal, Kenneth J. Dippong, Sonja Kelley, and José Villarrubia are just a few of the many names that come to mind. They nurtured my growth like rain nourishing a budding plant.
I also want to thank the Baltimore Office of Promotion and The Arts (BOPA) and the Baltimore Museum of Art. The experiences I gained working and volunteering there have been unforgettable. They provided me with opportunities that enriched my understanding of how art functions within society and the rules that govern it.
A special shoutout goes to Maxine Taylor, the owner of MAXgallery. She gave me my first opportunity to hold a solo exhibition. Her faith in my work and her unwavering support have been invaluable, providing a platform to showcase my art and further my career.
There are so many people to thank, and I am immensely grateful to everyone who has been part of my journey. Their support, mentorship, and encouragement have shaped who I am today.
