Meet G. Banks | Hip Hop Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with G. Banks and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi G., let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
When it comes to my legacy within the music industry, I want to be known as a well respected hip hop artist around the world. I never cared about the glamour life and my main focus is dropping music and creating classic bodies of work. I’m never trying to be the best because my only competition is myself and I feel others should have the same mentality. When its all said and done, I want to be remembered for the music. Even if I never get a record deal or make it “big”, as long as I can say something in my music that will inspire others or help them get through tough times, then that is good enough for me.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My music is my art! Out of everything I’ve done musically, I am most proud of my debut album, Of Late I Think of Banks. It took four EP’s and three mixtapes for me to drop that body of work but the process was worth it. To this day its my best project out. It took a long time to get where I am at today, it was a lot of years in the making. I started writing rhymes during my first semester of college back in 2011 and it started off as just something I was trying out and I wasn’t too serious about it. I wasn’t consistent with it but as years passed I had other homies that were making music and I started going to open mics to support and watch them perform and it started to inspire me and I also started to meet other local artists and producers. I started being a little more consistent after that and realized that I was actually pretty good if not better than most when it came to song writing because of my influences. I’ve always been a hip hop nerd so it was pretty easy to start rapping and making music because of all the 90’s and early 2000s artist that I studied throughout my lifetime. Towards the end of summer in 2016, I finally decided to record my first project and the rest is history. It took me five years to actually convince myself to record some music which was the most challenging obstacle to overcome because I wasn’t sure on how it would be received. I’m still not where I want to be with the music but I have a feeling it will happen very soon, until then I just have to stay consistent and motivated. Lessons I’ve learned along the way is to just be yourself and stay positive and don’t worry about what others think. The music industry is tough to make it in so you have to put in the work.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m not gonna front for this interview, I’m a very boring and introverted individual haha. I usually just be in the crib writing rhymes, making beats or playing video games with the squad. I don’t like going out or being around big crowds of people because my social battery runs out mad quick. If I were to take a friend out to show them a good time, it would be something chill like grabbing food or boba. There’s a donut spot in my city called Marie’s and they have been holding the city down for years. That’s a spot me and the homies go to late at night to just kick it. I don’t do clubs or bars so if anyone outside of Sacramento is reading this, I couldn’t tell you which spots to hit up, the most I can say is hit up downtown and you’ll find something.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Word, I dedicate my shoutout to all my people that support and play my music. To the homies that I make music with now, we all have the same goals and dream to become known within the music industry. Most importantly, shoutout to Sacramento, my city has a lot of talented individuals that will be making some big moves very soon.
