We had the good fortune of connecting with G. Larry Butler and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi G. Larry, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
At a certain point, pursuing an artistic career felt non-negotiable to me. My first hobby was visual art, starting with comic strips and evolving to portraits, I felt constantly pulled to draw pictures, to recreate the world through my eyes. I began singing at 10, mostly in musical theatre productions, and quickly.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from other actors is my total commitment to my craft. I have the potential of using real emotion in my work and always deliver 100%. It tends to set me apart from many other actors who merely say their lines without truly feeling the emotion that it requires. That’s the easy part for me. Ive always worn my heart on my sleeve. I cannot bluff at cards. People always know how Im feeling. Its in my eyes. What is not easy is the rejection, betrayal and conniving that showbiz generates. This business attracts the craziest type of people on the planet. Its difficult to navigate through the mine field, but I have done it fairly well for over 40 years. Ive developed intestinal fortitude and an ability to not totally trust anyone until they prove otherwise. My eyes dont ever dialate until Im on the set, and even then there is no guarantee the project will ever be completed and distributed. Out of 350 film and tv projects only 304 have ever made it out of the gate. My brand is an actor who can play every type of character on the emotional spectrum. Ive played meek people, monstrous people and every notch in between. There is no type of person I have not played convincingly. I am 76 now and will continue until I drop dead. My idols are Anthony Hopkins and Clint Eastwood. They dont let the old man in. Age is just a number. I fully believe that.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would start with Hollywood, visiting many of the old haunts where I started hanging out. Musso and Franks is good, and many of the places on the Sunset Strip that Hollywood is known for. Then to Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Venice Beach and San Fernando Valley. Then down to where I now live, after I finally escaped for North Hollywood, the South Bay near San Pedro and Palos Verdes. We have some of the best coastline views of any place in California. Terrena is a world class resort. Sunken City is a fabulous wreck of a place, and Pt Fermin Park is great.
I would take them on a kyak ride out into the bay. Later take a ferry across to Catalina Island for a day or so. Long Beach is a wonderful place to explore too. I am a mountain climber so we would hike some of the trails down near my house, enjoying Mother Nature. I would take them skydiving over in Temecula, Lake Elsinore or Perris. Wine tasting is fantastic there as well. There are so many terrific places to eat, drink and visit here. Too many to mention. Huntington Gardens is magical. Pasadena is as well. Griffith Park. The Observatory. Maybe a trip up to Santa Barbara. Another wonderful place. Also San Diego. The aircraft carrier the Midway, which I served on during my Navy career.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Since my journey into showbiz started in 1984 I have a large number of people to thank, but the ones who truly standout are JF Images in Denver CO for taking me on as a rookie and teaching me the fundamentals of acting and standard civility. How to eat without using my fingers, walking erect without dragging my knuckles and fashion sense, like wearing matching socks and other tips. They started getting me work in Commercials, then Print and I became an International Print Character Model. Then TV with Raymond Burr, Perry Mason Movies of the Week,, working with Tom Bosley in Father Dowling about the detective priest, then Dream West with Richard Chamberlain, My big break came with The Womens Club, which motivated me to come to Hollywood. William Winckler helped me a lot in Hollywood, by casting me in his first feature, The Double D Avenger. Then Frankenstein vs the Creature From Blood Cove, then numerous animation features dubbed into English by yours truly and other voice actors. My first agency in Hollywood , Film Artists started booking me in Commercials, then Guest Starring in TV series episodes. Recently I want to thank Maxine Moisley for casting me in the tv series Winning Time, the Rise of the Lakers, as Johnny Most, the Celtics Announcer. It was a 2 year series. My Atlanta agent Chris Ayers was instrumental in the audition. Plus the audition for Gaslit where I played Julia Roberts doctor. Shaun C Phillips directed me in about 10 films. We have a wonderful collaboration. James Balsalmo about 20. The Mahal brothers believed in me as well. My managers Yuka and Yumi too. Then Greg Tally and Halle Capone with thier new studio Collywood. There are so many directors and producers that were instumental in my career it would fill a book. Which I will write someday soon.
