Meet Gabriel Kalim Mucci | Film Director / Cinematographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Gabriel Kalim Mucci and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gabriel, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
Everything. Inspiration can come from everywhere, and it’s just a matter of how you observe things. A dialogue you hear in a restaurant. A picture you take during a hike. Someone you see crossing the street.
As a film director, I like doing this. Observe. Characters. Details. Textures.
Mainly because, for me, ideas come when I least expect them. And when they do, I want to keep nurturing them with inspiration and references and accessing emotions and experiences. Reading and watching everything that might help the process, the classics and the new stuff. And, eventually, producing it.
It’s a complete cycle, essential to feed my creative soul.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
There are always challenges when you want to express yourself, and you must do your best to overcome them. Whether in arts, journalism, politics, or in the food business. I can only speak from experience, which is with films. And for me, there are three main points for you to be able to fight for a place in the sun in this business.
First, you have to study. A lot. And I don’t mean necessarily going to film school. I mean, feed yourself with all the knowledge that is available to you. Read books, screenplays and articles about your favorite films or artists. Watch the new releases and all the classics you can. The theory will lay the necessary foundation, but it’s only by actually doing it that you will develop the craft.
And this is my second point. Practice. Take every opportunity that appears before you to film something. It’s mandatory a lot of dedication and hard work. You can never stop creating, writing, and producing it. Then you will be able to develop your style and vision.
At last, you need the ability, and luck, to find other creative people who believe in you and your work to help you make things happen. Whether it’s a little short film or a big production, films are something you cannot do alone. You’ll always be relying on the talent and skills of the crew to help you bring something you’ve created to life. Usually, it’s a magical process. Complex and laborious, yet, magical.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Not in this particular order, but I would say: A stroll in Los Feliz along Vermont Av, making a fundamental stop at the Skylight bookstore.
Eat at Crudo e Nudo, a cozy and delicious restaurant in Santa Monica.
Watch a film at the Alamo in DTLA. And since we’re there, grab something sweet at the Bottega Louie.
Explore the Topanga Hills.
Have a drink at Henry’s on Sunset.
And, of course, eat some tacos in one of the many fantastic food trucks, like El Ruso or Leo’s.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout goes to my talented, beautiful wife, Thais Simi. My partner in life and films. Throughout these years together, she taught me a lot and helped me evolve.
Thais took me by the hand and showed me how to connect more with my spirituality and emotions.
Allowing me to observe the world before me with more empathy and making it easier for me to express my ideas.
I wouldn’t be at this stage in my life if it weren’t for her.
Love you, gata.
