We had the good fortune of connecting with Gage Greenwood and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gage, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
This is one of the hardest obstacles for me, because I suffer from OCD. I have a tendency to dive into things in such a way where everything else around me suffers for it. If I am writing, even if I put the computer away and go for a hike, I might spend the entire time walking, thinking about the next chapter, or something I need to edit. It’s important for me to train my mind to leave things behind when they aren’t on the schedule. If I am writing from 2-3pm, then I need to put the story away with my computer. I have a son, and he deserves my full attention when I am not working. This gets trickier with self-publishing. If writing is one job, self-publishing is fifteen. I have my stories to write, and to edit, I have my social media accounts to keep up on, promotions to pay attention to, cover artists, editors, and designers to communicate with, I have my YouTube channel, and I have an email to send out every week. The list never ends. I have to remind myself to keep moving forward without drowning in work. If somethings get left behind, or pushed to the side, it’s okay. As long as I am moving forward and giving my family the attention they deserve.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a dark fiction author, and I also talk about my writing journey on my YouTube channel, where I share all of my experiences with fellow writers, so they can learn with me in real time. Before the pandemic, I was often working fifty or more hours a week, and even on my days off, I was answering phone calls or emails from clients, and I was doing this to help someone else’s dream come true for his business. During the pandemic, I had more time with my family, and spent a lot of time trying to figure out why my work life felt so hollow. In the end, I discovered that while I had many victories in my work life, I had no one to share them with. So, when I decided to start over and follow my own dreams, I was determined not to do it alone. I share every detail of my process with my readers, and the writers who follow my YouTube. I remind them all the time, that this isn’t my journey. It’s ours. I don’t want to do it alone. I want everyone with me. When I win, I want everyone else to feel like they won, too. Because they did. I can’t celebrate victories in writing without readers. I can’t celebrate YouTube milestones without writers. They boosted me to where I am, and they will continue to boost me to where I am going. So, I no longer have to celebrate my victories alone.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
To Callie Chase and Michael Lee at Book Genie. They’ve been mentors, tutors, consultants, and guides, but most importantly, they’ve been friends.
