We had the good fortune of connecting with Ganna Bubnova and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ganna, why did you pursue a creative career?
Working as an actor can offer lots of exciting opportunities to portray interesting characters and work in unconventional environments. Many people become actors because they have a passion for storytelling and enjoy taking part in creative performances. So did I.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I want to say that I’ve always known I wanted to become an actor; however, this was not the case with me. It didn’t start from when I was a toddler as I was never one of those children that felt a strong urge to perform in front of their parents. I was 8 when I started feeling the inclination to become an actor.
I started watching movies and imagined myself as the characters. It gave me a gateway as I began to develop my imagination. As I’d spent most of my childhood in different places I wouldn’t have lots of friends so through these visions, I didn’t feel alone anymore because I had a purpose. I was certain that I was going to become an actor. Like I knew it in my heart.
At the beginning, my parents thought it was a phase that will pass; however, I was very stubborn about it. Within 6 months of convincing, my aunt took me to my first acting class and I started training at the age of 10.
I didn’t book anything back then but I’d definitely feel myself alive having an opportunity to act in my school plays. Unfortunately I’ve never had a chance to get my acting degree in Ukraine but I was so blessed to have been given an opportunity to study it in one of the best schools in the world when I moved to New York City.
My first audition happened when I was 26 and I remember I had an important event that my friends insisted I attend and hence missed an audition that I probably won’t even get. However, I had this strong inner voice telling me to go and that I won’t regret it. I went there and booked the job. I booked my first acting job but more importantly, it was a confirmation that I am on the right path!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would consider taking my friend on a low-key beach bike cruise along the PCH, starting in Santa Monica, and biking all the way to Malibu, where we’d have lunch at Malibu Farm, and then visit the Hollywood walk of fame, drench ourselves in the history of Hollywood and the distinct smell of one of Matcha spots. Runyon Canyon and Griffith Observatory are two great hikes for the best cityscape views. Beaches like Venice or Manhattan are for night campfires and sunrises, but the best sunsets are from the DTLA and Beverly Hills rooftops with open air restaurants and pools. So, DTLA is for dinner, Chateau is for drinks later, especially if you want to meet celebrities – that’s the spot. Hollywood and WeHo for bars, little speakeasies, and “for locals only” secret bars a regular tourist wouldn’t wander into. Hollywood is filled with hidden pathways and secret spots, so your Saturday night can easily turn into an adventure. They always have music and performances going on, so no sleep! Also, if you want to immerse in the atmosphere of Los Angeles in the roaring 20’s, The Cicada is the place to go: go in and dive into the authentic vibe, accurately dressed guests, thematic drinks, and of course the live performance that will take you back in time.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’m grateful to have been surrounded by amazing people throughout my life. Each and every person I’ve encountered, I believe, has always been for a reason. I’d love to shout out to my scene study coach from The New York Film Academy (NYC), Anna Cianciulli, who not only believed in me, but inspired me to be confident about my acting choices. Her feedback, constructive criticism and direction were always fair and to the point. I mentally grew with her, not only as an actor, but as a human being. I remember she cried during one of my in-class performances. It empowered me so much that I felt confident enough to consider acting as a future career. Seeing how I was able to touch someone’s heart, so deeply, gave me hope and overall happiness. It is my goal, as an actor, to please, to inspire, and make that connection with my audience.
