We had the good fortune of connecting with Garrett Castillo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Garrett, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk taking followed me my whole life. I just have never been content where I always was. I was always looking to climb the next mountain in all aspects in my life and it ties into my creativity. Creativity feels so natural to me and risk taking feels natural to me too. I just don’t feel comfortable being safe. I always feel eager to be just on the edge all the time, always pushing it. I’m always looking around for the next corner for what endless possibilities could exist. I spent about 30 years in a safe place. I had a great career by all accounts, but it was safe. It never seemed as my end goal and where I was destined to land.
What should our readers know about your business?
I’m a movie trailer editor and started from the bottom and worked my way up to where I am today. I moved to L.A. inching my way up from being a production assistant/film driver, jumping into a Sound Editor opportunity doing Sound Editing and Sound Designing for movie trailers way back before there was such a thing as Sound Design. I spent countless hours in my downtime creating Sound Design elements called “Whoosh”, made a bunch of them and gave them to all the editors and they passed them along. This made my tracks spiderweb and spread around town. I did that for a while, but had a deep desire to have my career evolve as an editor, so I jumped into the brand new world of Video Trailer Editing.
I then went to events and people started coming to me and say “You are Garrett Whoosh, Oh my God! I’ve been using your stuff forever! It’s so nice to meet you! I can’t believe you are a real guy! I’ve been using your sound designs!” I really had no idea and it made me think about what I do and it kind of came full circle and back to my roots in a way. It feels like home. I am an editor but music is where I feel very comfortable. Time has passed by and I saw how the music world evolved, and that’s one thing ‘m passionate about; it’s music. Music is so important for the process of making people feel. There are visuals but there are these auditory feeling that you get when you have some pieces of sound that just sparks a feeling deep inside you.
What sets me apart and makes me a niche is that I am a trailer editor and I think like one, so I know what trailer editors are really looking for. When someone asks me for something, I know what they’re asking for and what they need because that’s what I need and that’s what I’d be asking for. I am speaking the same language as the people who are asking me for things, which cuts a lot of the miscommunication out.
As for if it was easy, that will be determined. I consider myself a work in progress. Some days are easy and some days aren’t easy. Everyday I wake up, I’m just not going to give up. When you’re passionate about something, it makes it easy and I love what I do. I could not do anything other than this. I’m terrible at adding, I don’t read, I can’t put a bedroom set together, but I can do this. I have very blessed and lucky that I fell into this.
I want the world to know that I would like to make a difference in people’s lives. If Garrett Whoosh Trailer Music and team can be a small part in a creation of something that can help, I get a smile about it and it makes me feel good inside.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting the area, I would show them Malibu and the coastal beaches, sit on the beach and BBQ all day and night, sit there and chill.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

Garrett is the kind of creative that makes our industry great! Thanks for sharing his story. Totally appreciate his path from driving all over LA to cutting the trailers the world sees… pretty dang cool.
Garrett is very deserving of this recognition. He has been a positive, encouraging person since I met him in high school. He hasn’t advanced himself by stepping on others, at his core he is a team player and wants to see all succeed. Congratulations Garrett
