We had the good fortune of connecting with Gem Nelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gem, how do you think about risk?
For a very long time I played it safe. I had an issue with taking risks because I didn’t want to step on anyone’s toes, and I really cared about what people thought of me. As I matured and experienced life, I understood that pleasing people is truly killing my dreams and that the only way to succeed and break free was to jump! Take a risk. I’ve built a healthy relationship with risk over time. Now if there is no risk involved, I feel like it’s missing something, and I am not as interested. Some call it risks, but I truly believe it’s taking a step of faith in the direction you are working towards. Life without risk is a sad one and one full of regrets. For me – risk now plays a huge role in my success. Every role I’ve booked, and every project I collaborated on involved some form of risk, but in the end, I ALWAYS gain more! It was never a loss. Risk actually guides me. In reality, it’s not always fun, but it’s so worth it because that’s where self-discovery and new doors are, and the only way to access the unknown is through risk. That’s life. I am still in the process of journeying with risk and accepting all it comes with – the good, the bad, and the ugly. History has shown me over and over again how the courage of risk taking can shift an entire generation.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am an artist. I am a creative. Lately, I’ve been just focusing on me inwardly. Taking a mental note of how I am processing things. Recently, I made my debut as a Director. Directing two sketches. It was amazing, and I learned a lot! This year I am focusing on disconnecting and connecting to what matters. The auditions have picked up and I’m blessed to be working and collaborating. How? Show up. I show up even when I don’t want too.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My hang out is anywhere in the mountains! Or the beach. I LOVE hiking. So far Temescal Canyon is my favorite because it’s like a 2 in 1. I can see the ocean in the distance while hiking. However, because of these gas prices my neighborhood park has been great. I go at least 3x a week.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Definitely my family and close friends. Specifically my mom. Moving back to LA she has been such a emotional support in keeping me motivated and grounded. My sisters (Precious and Jewel) I will forever be grateful for the times that it got real being an artist, they stepped in and made sure I had everything I needed and more. The words of encouragement, patience and being present. ❤️
