We had the good fortune of connecting with Genesis Renji and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Genesis, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my success is two fold. The first is having a great support system and team in place. Without the souls and hands that keep me focused, balanced, rested, celebrated, accountable and more, I’m just somebody shooting in the dark.
The other factor to my success is my immeasurable amount of ambition. It’s been an incessant tick that pushes me to constantly out do myself and search for more or what’s next.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started an indie label, the House Of Renji, at 20 years old. We’ve accomplished some things I’m proud of from halftime performances, festivals stages, and winning some awards and receiving nominations. I think what I’m most proud of still having this thing together 10 years later. Like, that’s not always something easy to achieve, and it’s not the prettiest trip either. There’s a ton of lows with what seems like very few highs, but those highs are so beautiful they make the valleys we’ve been through worth the challenges.
Persistence, faith, and relying on my team makes it possible to overcome the challenges I’ve encountered. You’ve got to put you trust in someone, so make sure it’s a solid group of people who are their own individuals with their own paths and goals that can lend to yours. We’re making the best happen with what we have at this moment.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Lord hammercy haha. I’m the worst with tourist stuff, a vacation for me is recording with a different view. But coming to the Mil, I’d have a few spots to hit depending on what’s happening.
For food options we’re visiting Daddy’s, best soul food in the city. Burgers and shakes, we’d go to Kopp’s or the staple Culver’s franchise. Mexican food, we’re hitting a local duckoff known as El Jalapeno. For drinks, there are a few bars Foundation, Izzy Hop, Jacks, and another one I can’t publicly share because that’s where me and my bro Mahdi go and nobody has tainted it yet haha.
Then if there are shows that week we’re probably venue hopping from NoStudios to Cactus Club to Company Brewing. Maybe hitting Pourman’s if DJ Gemini Gilly and Nick Stokes are DJing, shoutout to the gang.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There’s a million people who deserve some recognition in my story. I want to give my brothers, Zae & AK, some love for always being with me on this journey (by choice or otherwise ha). We’re really close and shared a lot growing up, and by default they had to be around for a lot of my interests and events I had going on. So shoutout to my boys for witnessing the come up and always being an inspiration.
