We had the good fortune of connecting with Genevieve Lerner and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Genevieve, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Work/life balance is one of the most difficult things for me because I love my work, and sometimes it doesn’t pay, and I work weird hours, and the boundary isn’t always clear. I also do a lot of work from home, but not all of it…so it gets confusing. As I’ve delved more into finding more and more income sources, this has gotten even more difficult. So I’m constantly reassessing, trying to take steps back and look over my life in general. I think about the balance as being constantly in flux. There’s a season for everything…sometimes I’m focusing more on work, sometimes more on my time with my friends and family.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve learned that in order to survive as an artist, I have to do a little bit of everything. So not only am I an actor, but I record audiobooks and audioseries, write books, copyedit books, work as a standardized patient, walk dogs, and a whole bunch of other things. This has bought me to a place where I am (mostly) in control of my life and schedule, I am able to financially support myself, and I don’t feel like anyone else is dictating my life for me. I think what sets me apart from others is that I do have a broad range of skills. So as I’m doing a voiceover, I’ll notice that a sentence sounds weird because it isn’t grammatically correct. I’m able to pull from other parts of my life into whatever project I’m working on at the moment.

It wasn’t easy to get here. I’m still trying to figure it out. But I’ve learned that I’m not just one thing, and that’s not only okay; it’s even better.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting the city, I’d definitely want to take them just around my neighborhood in North Hollywood, just to kind of see my day to day life. I love theme parks, so Six Flags, Knotts, Universal, or Disney would be on my list for sure. People watching on the Venice boardwalk is so much fun, as is people watching an exact opposite place, like the Grove!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My favorite LA organization, Kitten Rescue! I volunteer and foster with them, and they have saved so many cats from euthanasia. The people are wonderful and have been a great community and resource for me ever since I moved to LA four years ago.
