We had the good fortune of connecting with Georgia Sky and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Georgia, how do you think about risk?
Risks are terrifying because you never know the outcome. You don’t know if you’re gonna fail or succeed so I think that’s where people try to play it safe. Safe is the “known,” but I’ve always been the adventurous type. I want to know the unknown so taking risks is part of my journey. I’m an actor here in LA and it’s very rare that you see a Plus Size Black Lead represented in television and film so I decided to create my own lane and become the representation that I didn’t see. So I took the risk of joining TikTok (my creative outlet during 2020 due to Covid) and created my own content that means a lot to me but in the realm of acting and highlighting plus size stories. I didn’t know how it would do, I was scared for sure, but I’m so happy I believed in my vision and stayed true to myself because I’ve had such a positive response.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m an Actor and Content Creator. I’m also Plus Size and in Hollywood I don’t have “The Look.” So there’s two things I could do 1. lose weight to fit in and look like everyone else or 2. create my own lane and elevate stories like mine. Growing up in America as a Black Plus Size Femme my body is inherently political. It’s very rare you see a young Black Plus Size Lead so I want to be that. Usually when you see a plus size character they have to be the “sassy, larger than life, sidekick,” we are rarely the main character. So my brand Bawdy Queen is main character energy. I’ve been working on my craft since I was in middle school and I’ve had teachers say to me “Black actors should only be a slave or maid,” “Black actors can’t do Shakespeare,” “Georgia if you want to be a leading lady you need to lose 70lbs.” So I’ve used those type of racist, fat-shaming comments to motivate me today. Definitely was not easy because you hear those little voices when you start to doubt yourself, but I’m very happy where I am. I’m excited for where my brand Bawdy Queen and my content will lead me in the next 6 months to a year. Not only short form content for TikTok but long form content like a Web Series or a short film leading to a feature film because my TikTok has proven that there is an audience who wants to watch a series about what I represent. It’s authentic and everyone can relate to it. I’m very hopeful for the future, I would love to land my own show on HBO!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Haha well I’m not from LA but if my friends were to visit me I would take them to the Hollywood Lake Park. It’s a nice hidden gem up in the hills. I love the view of LA from up there and of course the Hollywood sign! My friends and I love HBO’s Insecure so I would find the apartment building that Issa’s character lived in for season 1. Malibu because I love the beach! I’m still a tourist myself haha! The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mentor L.Kenneth Richardson was my number 1 supporter, outside my family. He pushed me to be the person that I am today. Unfortunately he passed during 2020, but he never wanted me to settle for anything less than what I deserved. He constantly reminded me that there are MANY paths to success, that I don’t need to follow anyone else’s path. I can create my own lane and that there is power in that – to keep moving forward and not to let anyone deter me from it. I wish he was here so I can tell him how I am doing but I know he knows. And my family has been a constant support system and I love them deeply for that because not a lot of artists have that.
