We had the good fortune of connecting with Gernado and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gernado, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I come from a lineage of small business owners, leaders, bread winners so it has always been a natural process for me, wanting and starting my own business. I’ve always had an entrepreneurial mind set. Going back to when I was a kid I would sell bottles back to the stores, and cut grass for extra cash. My philosophy is if you can conceive it and believe it, then you can achieve it. All things are possible if you just believe. Having the willpower to put forth the effort to actually step out in faith to start the business and make it happen is what will determine you being a business owner or not.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Social impact: how does your business help the community or the world?

My business motto is “Be Useful Never Give In” and I stand on the meaning by leading by example. We help our community in several ways from arts and entertainment and by using our business creative services with our non-profit Stop The Violence Use Your Talents, Incorporated http://www.stvuyt.com that promotes education and the use of talents instead of violence; this encourages positive productivity. Stop the Violence Use Your Talents was created to bring awareness to unnecessary violence plaguing our communities and combat that by promoting to our youth the use of their talents. This is dedicated to enriching the lives of young people by edutaining them through positive options, facilitating connections between children and celebrity mentors, political leaders and community activists. We do this with things like Stop The Violence Tv Show created to expose our talents through multimedia. Our organization also produces “Stop The Violence” Public Service Announcements (PSA) commercials done and placed into TV broadcast and cable network rotations to help send a positive message of hope to all.

Risk taking: how do you think about risk, what role has taking risks played in your life/career?

Being a published author I write books in the category of personal development or self help. As an entrepreneur one takes risks over and over again through the course of one’s career. My first book “Winning: Against All Odds, Entrepreneur Tools For Success” I inform readers what the book is about by stating in the introduction “Accept the challenge and take the risk of going after your dreams. Life is a gamble and it’s time to bet on yourself. What you think matters, and what you do can change the world. Your identity is vital. It’s time to speak up and be a voice in today’s culture.” I write more throughout the book about taking risk as even being a self-published author proves that which is stated concerning taking risk. For more examples, here are a few things I’ve pulled from one of my books on the topic.

“Risk-taking is yet another thing that you must keep in mind – for if you don’t take the necessary risks you may never achieve the things that you want to. Oftentimes, risks can result in greater rewards. Playing it safe, keeping to the sidelines and never getting into the midst of action will only ensure that you don’t live the life of your dreams.” – Gernado Abrams

“Being a risk-taker comes with ups and downs. It is not always a smooth ride. If anything, it can resemble a rollercoaster ride, which will let you experience the highs and the lows like you have never before. This is how it is when you work at a business. Entrepreneurship is a constant grind to get what you desire. However, it is only true that risks are necessary if you want yourself to reach the heights that you are capable of.” – Gernado Abrams

“It is for this reason that I believe that when you take up the risks and get involved with the things that you love, you will always find a way – and not just one way but several ways.” – Gernado Abrams

If you are a parent, what do you think is the most important thing you’ve done as a parent in terms of the impact on your children?

No kids, but I do have God children, a niece and a nephew that I always instilled to go after your dreams. Mainly I lead by example, that’s how I was raised to lead by example.

What is the most important factor behind your success / the success of your brand?
Persistence, and Motivation to keep going. Period

How to know whether to keep going or to give up?

First off, giving up is not an option. I don’t think in those terms. I am a real BOSS. It’s not logical in my world. My thought process is if you are in pursuit of accomplishing your goals, you keep going until you achieve it. The repetitive accomplishments are what fuel the motivation to keep going.

Work life balance: how has your balance changed over time? How do you think about the balance?

The energy you put in is what you get out of anything. My days are busy because I’m juggling several projects that are in development. At times many days I am drained at the end of a sixteen hour day. However living on the coast has its benefits of me staying balanced in the elements of earth around me.

What makes you happy? Why?

Accomplishing my dreams makes me happy. Each time that I complete a goal or task I set out to do makes me happy. Most of all, each day that I arise and give thanks for life is one of the most important parts of my happiness.

Why did you pursue an artistic or creative career?

In my early years, I had a deep love of music. I just loved listening to music. I liked how I felt when I listened to music, as if waves of bliss rolled inside me, even making me want to cry tears of joy at times. So, naturally, I became very curious about music. I decided to learn how to create music, and how to use the instruments that produced music. I started out with learning one instrument and did not stop there. I soon found out about instruments I loved and I learned how to play them too. First, it was just the drums. In time, I moved on to learning how to play the trumpet, baritone, and piano as well. Each appealed to me so much that I, very naturally, felt the desire to get more and more involved with them. This, too, was not the end. Before long, I decided that I wanted to learn how to write music too. To help myself in this regard, I enrolled in a School of Arts to be in the right atmosphere.  This expanded into a full-fledged plan where I learned to read, write as well as produce music. I started practicing my music-related capabilities at Church, where I got the know-how of the whole set-up using monitors and other audio equipment so that I could record music.

Eventually, this became a part of my career. Something that I love completely, let me add. Starting out from the bottom level, I made my way up with persistence and patience – all for the sake of what I loved – until I reached the stage where I became a manager, an artist, a producer and the CEO of my own independent record label B.M.O. Boss Music Online which is under the umbrella of my company Bungi Enterprises.

I go more in depth on this in my book Winning: Against All Odds | Entrepreneur Tools For Success also available on Amazon, or where you love to get your books.

How do you define success?

I always get asked this question. Right now just having peace, being at a state of serene is a success.

However, as I’ve stated before: “I define success as having a thought of an idea, setting a goal, and acting upon it accomplishing what you set out to do.”
