We had the good fortune of connecting with Ginger Burr and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ginger, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
While I know many women in their teens and twenties have a sense of confidence in their personal styles and feel like they can throw something on and look good, that was never my personal experience. I always felt like something was missing or other people looked better, but I never seemed to be able to put my finger on what wasn’t working so that I could fix it!

That’s when I met a woman who was conducting a 3-day workshop on ‘Fashion, Color & Image.’ I was fascinated by the topic and from the minute I was in the workshop I knew I was in the right place. Not only did she have the answers I was looking for, but I picked up the concepts quickly and experienced firsthand how transformative it was to understand how to assess the different elements of an outfit.

I knew I wanted to be able to empower other women to feel less stress and more joy in their wardrobe and I convinced her to train me. Basically, I now (and have for many years) teach what I originally needed to learn. I feel that makes me even better at what I do because I’ve walked in my clients’ shoes and I understand their frustrations and sense of discouragement. I’ve been there and I can guide them through those stuck places and help them feel more ease and joy when they get dressed each day.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a self-proclaimed introvert, while I was excited to start my own business, the thought of ‘selling’ my services was scary. Before websites (yes, I started my business that long ago!), the general practice to find clients was cold calling or networking. I had zero experience in business, but I knew I wasn’t going to call someone out of the blue! And, believe it or not, I didn’t know what networking was! I clearly had so much to learn. But I had a passion for helping women feel good about how they looked and I’m nothing if not determined.

While I learned to be a good networker, I also was excited as websites became a popular way to share information. And since I see my clients when they are feeling vulnerable about how they look and are often in their underwear as they try things on, I knew a website was a way for them to get a sense of who I am and how I can help them before they commit to anything. Even now, when websites are the norm and there are many more image consultants out there than there were when I started my business, I am often the first one found online. It’s a win-win – an introvert’s dream and a way for potential clients to explore the possibilities before we connect.

When someone, who wants to be an image consultant, contacts me for advice, I always tell them they need three things to be successful: passion, persistence and training and I would add consistency to that. Even after more than 3 decades as an image consultant, I still feel passionate about what I do and how I can help my clients. I love that each woman has a unique style, personality and desires when it comes to her personal style and through persistence and consistency, my passion for what I do and my extensive training, I can help her get there.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Okay, so I’m pretty boring when it comes to this question! Even though I live in the city, I am one block from the ocean where it’s peaceful and beautiful. The area is an oasis in a chaotic world. Most of my friends tend to be, like me, fairly quiet and, while I live close to Boston, we won’t be walking the freedom trail or going to Fenway Park. We’ll spend our time connecting, walking on the beach, visiting coffee shops and preparing beautiful vegan meals. There’s an amazing vegan restaurant not far from me, The Organic Garden, and that’s where I take nearly everyone. Of course, given that my area of expertise is fashion, I’m always open to shopping at a local store or boutique for fun! I’m not sure everyone would label the visit exciting, but it works nicely for my friends and me.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Nevena Christi Sadly she is no longer with us, but her support, guidance, encouragement and inner and outer beauty changed my life forever.
