Meet Giselle Portillo | Business Owner & Student

We had the good fortune of connecting with Giselle Portillo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Giselle, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
The most important lesson I have learned in my business is to not be afraid to take risk. The initial insecurities that I experience held me back to many opportunities, until I decided to just go for it. If risks are not taken, I’ll miss out on positive outcomes. If there was a time where I took a risk and I failed, I know to do better next time.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business was created with the intent to create new flavors of cookies, cakes and other deserts. I love seeing people enjoy my creations and ask for more! I am most proud of my mini pancake, which have the ability to awaken anyones sweet tooth. I admit it has not been an easy journey, but my customer make it worth it. I overcome challenges by thinking them through and slowing down when necessary. As cliche as it sounds, the biggest lesson I have faced is to never give up! I am senior in high school striving to go to college in the near future. I am excited how this journey will flourish into a career and see my growth. I am currently finishing up a CNA program in which I plan to turn into a Bachelors in Nursing, and minoring in Business. I believe I am persistent and smart enough to follow both my passions of medicine and culinary arts. As of today, I believe it is my passion of baking, that has made me who I am today.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Whittier is a diverse and fun city where it is full of small shops and entertainment. A mix of everything could be located at Uptown Flee, a small shop pop up where you can enjoy the most fabulous tacos and thrift jackets and jews! Whittier is home to many small shops and what better way to spend your weekend than to shop small and support others. I would next spend evening in uptown Whittier by enjoying a movie and snacks!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to thank my family for the love and encouragement of me starting my own business. Without them I would not have the courage to take on challenges and risk that I have taken in the past years.
