Meet Goldwyn Thandrayen | Guitarist, Singer, Songwriter, Music Video Director

We had the good fortune of connecting with Goldwyn Thandrayen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Goldwyn, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I was born in Mauritius it’s a tropical island located off the East coast of Madagascar, think Hawaii but better and yes our beaches are spectacular and shark free.
I moved to Glasgow Scotland after high school to pursue a degree in International Business Law and have a better chance of making music a career.
As In the early 2000’s, maybe even now a career in music in Mauritius is not a thing. If you’re really really good and considered a professional musician you can only get as far as locking in a steady hotel gig on the weekends. Forget about playing Rock or Metal music. Which just happen to be the music I was into.
That pursuit took me from Glasgow to New York City. From San Diego to Montreal, and Boston to here Los Angeles. Having gotten to live and experience each of these cities I got to absorb quite a lot and create more than music alone, I got to explore the visual medium along with the ride. I think it turned me from a Musician to Artist. At least today I would consider myself more an Artist than a musician even though my guitar and my voice has been and is my passport to the world.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started off as guitar player, somewhere along the way I fell into songwriting and singing. I got to be in a rock band, a jazz band, write and record 3 albums. That eventually led me into music videos, from directing, editing to color grading to story telling.
I am now at a new chapter of my life where I am just traveling with my acoustic guitar, writing new songs, and exploring different styles of music mainly folk at the moment. I am hoping to hit some open mics and do some shows with a new style by the end of the year, and I have a lot of cool people helping me find my new sound.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would Torture that person with a crazy work out in the morning at 5 AM. trick them into yoga then take them out to breakfast at my gym LAAC its a well disguised club they will not see the weight training coming. After we lift we eat at the club with wine. and hit a live show at night probably at the Whiskey or Comedy show at the Comedy store.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My Mentors in music are : Art Hirara, Evan Gregor, Jared Schoenig, Kiko Loureiro, Archie Cruz, Madeleine Harvey, Christian Cummings.
In Athletics people who help keep me in shape and out of trouble: Valentina Leqeux, John Cortes, Mauricio Antunes, , Cezar Galvao
All the friends and family I made along my journey.
