We had the good fortune of connecting with GrandAce and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi GrandAce, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I’d have to say that the most important factor behind the success that I’ve managed to have so far is my love for tinkering with any and everything until it works. My brain is all over the place and in no way as efficient as I’d like it to be, but a benefit of this is that I’m rarely content with where I’m at pushing me to constantly get better. I’ve been putting out music since 2014, and everything I’ve released has imperfections weaved throughout. The flaws give the music and my story as an artist far more character than if I started “perfect” and makes it more enjoyable for listeners to follow the progression. I give my all to each thing I work on, which extends to my branding, videos, search engine optimization, everything.

In the future, I want to be able to have progress that’s fun to retrace and re-experience.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I create because I want to connect with the world. It just so happens that in the same breath, I get to get everything off of my chest and create worlds. As competitive as I am, I try to keep my focus on art as internal as possible. When I get to creating, I reach a level of vulnerability that I’m not always able to tap into through words alone. Music especially is important to me because it surpasses any language barrier and can be felt as much as it’s heard. If I can’t really FEEL what it is that I’m working on, I scrap it. Connecting and reaching freedom is everything for me.

With about 8 years in the game, I still consider myself to be super early in my career but it’s impossible to avoid the blues of being an independent artist. There is so much music out there and without a machine pushing my music forward, it’s easy to get lost in the sea, so for me I’ve had to solidify what I consider success. I aspire to reach and capture the hearts of billions one day, but right now, every time I can impact ONE listener or gain a supporter, that means the world to me. As discouraged as I get, I will never allow myself to give up because I feel that if there’s a chance that my perspective on the world can help make someone else just a bit easier, all the anxiety and worry is worth it.

I want my music to be fun. I want it to be something that people can take with them through their years. I want my music to be something that people look forward to experiencing.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Alright, We’re going to have the best week ever – first thing we do is get a really nice place to stay through a house rental service. Preferably one with glass stairs and a ton of good sunlight. We invite like 6-7 other people to come crash and they gotta bring gaming setups. Lots of Tekken, Melee, and Marvel vs. Capcom is crucial.

Next we’re getting Thai food (Thai Express or Lemon Grass) for lunch. You can get what you want but I’m getting Spicy Fried Rice with chicken spicy level 10/10. This could be an everyday thing but we’ll sub out with Indian food when necessary.

Next grab your skateboard cause we’re street skating around the city with the homies even though only 2 members of the group can skate handrails. Whatever we can fit on our back goes, the rest stays at the house.

Afterwards, everybody heads back to the house to prepare to head out. There’s a art gallery/house show going on that we gotta hit so we acquire details. House show is crazy, crowds are packed with moving room and there’s an open jam so we get to contribute a little bit. Best part, there’s about 3 more house shows to hit with a lot of cool weird folk to converse with.

Did I mention for the sake of the best time ever, we’re going to say the city got a really sick beach with a view, so we hit that for the evening and listen to the waves while reminiscing and telling stories with no conclusive endings.

Days over. Repeat with variations of food spots, random encounters, art centers, fighting game locals, and movie premieres thrown into the mix!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I always gotta start with God for pulling me out of some crazy situations, I’d absolutely have to shoutout my mom and dad for originally showing me that a career in art is possible and I have to give a HUGE thank you to the GrandCouncil for being an amazing listener base and support system. All of my songs would still be sitting at 0 if not for them!
