We had the good fortune of connecting with Grant Dacklin (DXCKLIN) and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Grant Dacklin, how do you think about risk?
Risk is the unknown and I think it is how we learn about ourselves because it’s a challenge. As a college student running my own production studio and doing a lot of work outside of the academic field, it’s a risk to be fully present in both worlds (working on my music with the people I believe in or study for my mid-term) it’s tiring and stressful. But that push everyday to get both done to the best of my ability makes me a stronger artist.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Before I was a professional producer, I performed as a contemporary dancer for 7 years with a company. I believe that my rhythmic decisions in my music reflect the decisions I would make as a mover. I trained in Hip Hop a lot as well, mainly house dancing and popping, and learning how to hit certain beats, sounds, transitions, trained my ears to enjoy certain effects that I later translated into my own production. In a session my goal is to always push the vocal artist to do something they were not expecting to do, try a vocal take they have never tried, and come out with a product that hopefully changes their perspective on whats possible for them to do for their future work.

inspiration from Artists like Billy lemos, Underscores, Dobi, Flying Lotus, Knxwledge, KAYTRANATA, and many more.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would 100% take them to West Hollywood. Walk around the neighborhoods taking pictures and going shopping on Melrose. I would introduce them to my friends who live in an apartment close by where they have studios in their bedrooms, and we would make a bunch of music and hangout (my favorite thing to do). I would take my friend to Manhattan beach, which is my favorite one out of all the beaches, and go surfing, play music, throw the frisbee; all the fun beach things. Thursday nights at my music college, we have a event called Gallery night where all the artists at the school present their art, music, dance visuals, etc. and we would talk with the surrounding people about their work and live it up. This last year i’ve only surrounded myself with amazing creative individuals, and I think for me that is what the “LA experience” is all about.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Of course! I want to give a shoutout to Resonance Entertainment, owned by Buppy, for giving the me the support I need to move forward as a producer, that includes all the artists within Resonance that I have become very close with and who I consider my family💙 and Shoutout to my Mom, Dad, and Sister for supporting my decisions and allowing me to explore different artistic mediums at a young age.

Lastly a thank you to my first Audio Mentor Jared for giving me the technical stepping stones I needed to create music in Ableton and your overall advice on living life!
