We had the good fortune of connecting with Grant Pogosyan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Grant, why did you pursue a creative career?
I remember back in the 5th grade we had to write a paper on what we wanted to be when we grew up. I chose graphic designer and stuck to it. I love every second of it. I’m so happy I did what I wanted and never listened to the 100 voices around me telling me otherwise. I wake up and go to my office with a smile on my face! I don’t understand how people go to work and hate what they do, or at the very least like it.
The main reason as to why I continue in my career is because I want to broaden the impact I can leave on my surroundings through my work. I used to work at one corporation or brand at a time and focus on making them look better across the board. I knew I could do so much more than that. Instead of that I knew I needed to extend my service to everyone I possibly could around me. I was tired of seeing bad design all around me, I needed to make myself available to fix it all!
At times I look around and just hate how things have been designed without any thought or care and I know something needs to be done. My wife calls me dramatic because of my reactions to bad design but I like to think that I’m passionate. 🙂
My ultimate goal in starting my business was to create better looking brands, better looking businesses and ultimately a better looking city.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I don’t like to compare myself with others. I feel like there will always be someone better and someone worst? I like to focus on myself, growing as a person mainly because that then bleeds into all other aspects of my life. If I become a better person, I will be a better husband, father and designer.
Building something takes time, energy, commitment, I am proud of what I have at this moment. I’m proud of myself for getting out of my “comfort zone” for trying new things and being able to look back at those little pebbles that seemed like mountains.
I always feel anxious about the future and the unknown but who doesn’t? It’s scary. I learned that love and patience are the most important qualities to have. Love for myself, love for the brands I work with, love for it all. Love helps you be patient and I do believe that good things come to those who wait.
My brand is Grantedesigns.
My name is Grant. I do designs, obviously.
My logo is a genie lamp because I like to think that I grant design wishes.
A double entendre on my name.
There’s also a hidden message in my logo. The genie lamp is a letter “Z.” This is for my wife’s first initial, I wanted to incorporate that into my logo subtly to show that she is the reason of my success.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh God. One thing I suck at is being a good host.
Sat here with my hands on the keyboard for 20mins with a blank stare…
I have to imagine all this to be able to answer this question. I’m going to pick a specific friend, pretend he wasn’t from here and based on his preferences show him around.
• I would Turo a really fast car, he’s car guy. I don’t get it but it would make him happy.
• Sushi is a must. I personally enjoy Sugarfish for the raw nigiri cravings.
• Downtown jewelry district is always fun.
• Rodeo drive. I would avoid the major tourist spots. Everyone hates that.
• Bestia – absolute favorite restaurant.
• I would definitely do the Observatory and some art museums like the Getty.
• A lot of gathering at the house in the pool. Bbq, alcohol, video games!
• A lot of video games.
Idk if this is from being Armenian but every ” good time” requires at least 25 people and a lot of food and alcohol.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A little credit?
My wife deserves all the credit. I would never be in the current mental state as I am now without her. I wouldn’t be able to run a business without her support. She may not be qualified in a legal sense, however she is the best therapist I can ask for. Sometimes I’m unable to express that to her, I hope she knows the impact she continues to leave on me. She is truly a GREAT individual, a cornerstone in my personal and professional life.
I love you Zara.
