We had the good fortune of connecting with Greg Howard Jr and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Greg, what do you attribute your success to?
I don’t take myself too seriously. In the creative world, there are a lot of artists and content creators who look down their noses at others in their field because they may do things differently and that shows in their work. I’ve always said that when whatever I’m doing stops being fun then I move on to the next endeavor and that’s helped a lot with keeping my content from feeling stagnant and joyless.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve always been a performer, from high school theater and show choir to doing drag in my late twenties/early thirties. I don’t think it was ever a choice for me, but more something I had to do. Over the course of my life, I’ve learned to recognize when I’ve said all I need to say or done all that I can do and it’s time to move on to whatever the next thing is. I don’t think it’s ever been easy, at least first starting on a new project be it writing a new book or launching a new podcast. I think that when it feels easy starting out then you’re not challenging yourself enough to put out something new and fresh.

I always ask myself before I start a new project: “Does this feel like something someone else has done?” If the answer is yes then I find a way to turn it on its head and make it mine as opposed to what everyone else is putting out and that’s what I’m most proud of.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m such a homebody hahaha

The Huntington Library Gardens is always a go-to, The Academy Museum never gets old, Grand Central Market is always a must, Griffith Park, LACMA, The Last Bookstore. I’m not sure that’s a week’s worth of things to do, but it’s a good start.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Definitely my family who have always supported whatever I was doing be it drag, writing, or podcasting. My business partners Eliann and Brandon have kept me from burning myself out doing too much. Author Jennifer Bush-Harris is my rock when it comes to talking out new ideas. Tracey Matthews, a constant collaborator, keeps me going on the days that I feel like everything I put out is trash. Elle Murasaki is the kind of creator I want to be when I grow up, I’m constantly in awe of how she does it.
