We had the good fortune of connecting with Grimstyles and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Grimstyles, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Success is a relative term because everyone defines “success” differently. To some, owning a mansion in the Hollywood Hills is success – to others owning their own business and being self-employed is success. As an Rap artist, my main objective is to put out the best music I possibly can. I strive to better myself as an artist on every song I record. The most important factor behind my success is drive and determination; my drive and determination to hold myself accountable.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I was born six weeks prematurely and I was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at birth. Being born with a physical disability, I felt I was always at a disadvantage. I didn’t get the opportunity to play football or baseball as a youth; therefore, I treat my music as a sport. I set aside specific days to write lyrics, rehearse lyrics etc. Those are like my practice days. When I am in the studio recording, or performing on stage, those are my game days.

The beginning of my music career was not easy, a lot of it was trial and error. I threw a lot of ideas at the wall to see what would stick. Thankfully, through the power of the internet and networking I was able to build a fan base that I am able to sustain almost a decade later. The one lesson I learned throughout my career is to be consistent but don’t burn yourself out. Don’t sit in front of a computer for hours hoping for inspiration; instead, dedicate 20-30 minutes to your craft then work from there.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting Bakersfield, I would take them to eat barbeque. Bakersfield has some of the best barbeque in California. Salty’s BBQ in Bakersfield is known nationwide for their barbeque; they have been featured on Diners Drive-Ins & Dives on the Food Network. After that, we would go to Jerry’s Pizza to catch a local show. There’s a lot of great local talent from Bakersfield that people will be hearing about in the near future.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Without a doubt, I would not be in the position I am now if it wasn’t for my family. My family has provided me with a stable foundation to build on and start my musical journey. Starting a career in music, regardless of the genre, is very unpredictable, and my family has been there every step of the way.
