We had the good fortune of connecting with Gursimran Singh and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gursimran, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I hail from a small town in Punjab, India, wherein Filmmaking is a foreign concept to all. In fact it was a foreign concept to me as well! I’ve been an avid film goer but I’ve never thought about the behind the scenes of the same. If it wasn’t for photography I would’ve never made myself familiar to a camera and hence began my journey to understanding images which then furthered my interest in moving images. With the curiosity to learn more I found myself at New York Film Academy in Los Angeles, CA. I chose to explore all avenues of filmmaking here and felt at home when I was either Producing or Directing on set. It began with one short film after the other and when Covid hit the market for music videos started to pick up. I steered myself towards that and before I knew it I was Producing for Diljit Dosanjh’s recent album ‘Moon child Era.’

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve already discussed how I got here professionally so I’ll tackle the other half of this question. Like always, navigating the industry at first was tough. I’ve spent time thoroughly learning and applying the technical knowledge. It wasn’t easy until I practiced it so much that now it feels like breathing. My biggest challenge was on one of my biggest sets as a Producer- ‘Lover.’ However, it was such a great experience that I’m glad for all the work my team and I have put into it. The result and the reach of the song has truly been great!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Being in LA, my love for the ocean is immense! However, I love going to spots that are normally not as discovered and hence, I’ve found this low-key spot by the Malibu cove. It is fairly untouched and the sunsets from there are the best! Other than that I love Pasta from II Pastaio near Beverly.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’ve always been grateful for the support that my parents have given me and I’m thankful to this date for their blessings. However, the one point in my life which helped me steer in this direction was when I first reached out to Rahul Dutta. He gave me the opportunity to shadow him on set where in I picked up practical knowledge about the workings of a set and fell in love with the process of filmmaking. Apart from him I would like to thank my friends who have helped me and believed in my work since my university days. Friendships like this go a long way and I hope on keeping these connections as we all climb the ladder together.
