We had the good fortune of connecting with Haibei Wang and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Haibei, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
It took me a while to understand that pursuing music composition as a career is similar to running a business. Apart from writing music, I have to deal with clients, paperwork, self-marketing, budget management etc. Composing becomes the easiest one among all of these. The advantage of running my own music business is having a full control of what I want to do and what I make. However, the disadvantage is also obvious, which is time management. .

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I consider myself a cross-genre artist/composer who writes music for multimedia, theatre, and the concert stage. My compositions incorporate elements of classical orchestral music, electronic music, jazz music, and Eastern folk influences. As a full-time composer, I write personal musical stories. I also write music to make a living. Regardless of my music’s function, my goal is to present a unique voice through my music. I like to use the words “storytelling” and “emotion” to describe my voice. I’m also a big fan of technology, as I love incorporating new technology into my compositional approach.

Music is my dream when I was a kid. It was never easy, otherwise it wouldn’t be a dream. After years of working as a full time composer, I gradually become better at balancing the musical part and the business part; dealing with the pressure for multitasks and deadline. I will always have new challenges when new projects arrive. The only thing I keep in mind to get through it is to work hard and be true to myself.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Here is a list of my favorite places in New York City:

Musical events: New York Philharmonic, Met Opera, New York City Ballet, Broadway, Birdland Jazz Club, Village Vanguard, Smalls

Museum: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, MOMA, The National Jazz Museum in Harlem,

Tourist places: Central Park, Gantry Plaza Park, Little Italy, St. Patrick’s Cathedral

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people in my life I would like to shout out to. Starting from my family, they have been so supportive throughout my entire music career. Meanwhile, I want to shout out to the artistic environment that I’m surrounded with. The music industry is truly competitive, but I always find my colleagues and peer composers kind enough to lift me up and cheer for my achievements! Lastly, I want to thank myself for persistence in hardworking.
