We had the good fortune of connecting with Hailey Foss and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Hailey, why did you pursue a creative career?
Growing up, I did two things: musical theatre and rodeo competing. And both of those gave me this insane adrenaline rush that I never got anywhere else. Then I started working in films and commercials and became so fascinated with all the puzzle pieces being put together. I had no idea how much work goes into a project and how many people it takes. I felt like I was a part of something bigger than myself, and found it so neat how all these strangers came together to make this piece of art, whether that’s a film, series, commercial or a play! Everyone had the same goal; to create something unique, honest and good.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When I was in high school, I signed with a boutique agency in Calgary, Alberta and started auditioning for primarily film and commercials. I have been the face of various brands including Vessi Shoes, Fatburger Restaurants and SnO Swiss Skincare. I have also starred in the music video “Tougher Than Love” (premiered on Country Music Television), the cult horror film “Red Letter Day” (Dread/Epic Pictures) and the feature film “Footlights” (HGA Films). Upcoming, I’m excited to be starring in the Off-Broadway premiere of the original play “Shadows” from Face to Face Films. Since I began my journey, I’ve had experience with different mediums like film and theatre and I have absorbed so much! It is a difficult industry and I’ve learned a lot by trial and error. I don’t come from a family of artists, so I’ve kind of paved my own path, gathering information from people I’ve met along the way. I studied at the famed Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in NYC to get more technical acting training and to learn how to better use my body and voice for performance. I was taught the Meisner technique and it has helped me immensely. Whenever I get nervous about a role or scene, I go back to my training, which is often reminding myself how to be present, or to simply listen and react to my scene partner. Every time I get the opportunity to act and perform, I take it with full force! I still get that adrenaline rush that I got when I was a musical theatre kid, and that feeling is something that keeps me going.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Gosh, where is there not to go in New York! I live in Lincoln Square, Manhattan and my favorite places to go work and have a coffee are the David Geffin Hall and Boule and Cherie. My favorite restaurants/eats are Thyme and Tonic (yummy gluten free spot), Harvest Kitchen and Peacefood (best carrot cake on earth). I have an AMC movie membership, so I love going to see a movie in the massive Dolby theatre. I would also go see a film or play at Lincoln Center as their facilities are stunning inside! We would have to go to the MET, as I have been there twice and still haven’t seen all of it! Then, Central Park to dog/people watch and potentially buy a piece of art. I also love the Grand Bazaar market (Sundays on the Upper West Side). They have so many vendors that sell clothes, food, antiques, you name it! It’s just fun to walk through on a Sunday. If someone was visiting New York for the first time, I would definitely be taking them to Times Square and a Broadway show (currently I really want to see Jessica Chastain in A Doll’s House on Broadway).

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’m a 2022 Alum of The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre (original school of the Meisner technique) and the faculty and programs there were so monumental in my journey! Getting to be taught by acclaimed teachers like Pamela Moller Kareman, Sandy Faison, Todd Susman, John Tyrrell, and James Brill. They taught me how to nurture my instrument, how to have a sustainable career in the arts and they have been there as a source of mentorship and family. I am truly grateful to everyone at The Neighborhood Playhouse!
