Meet Han Le | Guerrilla Filmmaker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Han Le and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Han, why did you pursue a creative career?
I mean any realistic person would never go for a career in Art, any parents would be able to tell you that, there is no money nor future in there, only hardship. The majority of artists are never gonna make it, that’s statistic, only a few becomes successful. So if you choose to pursue an artistic career, it’s because you love it, you can’t do anything else without missing that burning artistic desire, there is a deep longing to tell that story, to show off, to prove to the world that you can produce something interesting, no matter the cost. And you will do whatever it takes to bring that art, that vision to life. The money is an afterthought, to me. There is no point discussing it.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
It was never easy being a filmmaker, and I only make the films that I wrote. There is so much to learn, so many obstacles to overcome, artistically or financially, plus Hollywood is a maze with trapdoors. Sometimes it gets so hard that you would want to go nuts and abandon ship but that’s all part of the journey. It was never meant to be easy, too many people compete for a few jobs, the film market is incredible tough, its an uphill battle and all you have is yourself and your buddy. There is only so much abuse a person can take. But if you are okay with that, you embrace that, and you learn to navigate these treacherous water, you will go far. To grow as an artist is painful cause change hurts, there is so much to do. But if there is little progress in anything then I would call it a success. It never get easier, actually the higher you climb, the more slippery it will be.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Me being a nerd I probably take them to my local library and scout for new books. LA has excellent system of public library. And not so shabby Korean food either. The art museum is always fun to check out. And most people would never forget SkidRow.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have many friends and mentors that come and go, they help me with bearing the loneliness cause writing is a lonely profession. You always need friends no matter how introverted you are, the value of companionship should never be underestimated. Directors are often lone-wolf, its our traits but with friends, you can go far.
