We had the good fortune of connecting with Hansen Yang and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Hansen, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
First of all, it is the family business. Starting with my grandfather, almost all my family members have worked in or are related to an artistic career. So, I am the new generation to carry on this family spirit. Second, creativity is the most significant factor that led me into the industry. I enjoy every moment I spend creating different visual narratives, from the preproduction phase till I look through the eyepiece. Because I understand I am pushing myself hard and creating something I poured my effort into.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Right now, I am working as an independent director of photography, working on some small productions most of the time. Among all the works I have done, I still love narrative films. I see myself as a narrative-pushed cinematographer, creating beautiful shots and visually enhancing the narration to connect the audience with the story. Every shot or scene I composed and the color I picked all serve its purpose. This is what I am most proud of.

I think what I have achieved today was not easy, especially in this industry; I would take even a slim chance to prove myself and put my name and reputation out there. After the amount of work I have been doing, people start to acknowledge my name and land me more key positions in those creative works.

Back to the last paragraph I mentioned, a good reputation is key to being successful in this industry. It may be hard, but if you put your heart, love, and passion into the work you’ve been signed on to, eventually, people will notice that, and in the near future, people will come back to you and provide you with more opportunities.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would bring my friend to the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures; they always have cool and educational exhibits, and sometimes, they will screen the best classical cinema in their screening room. Last time I got a chance to see Lawrence of Arabia. Peterson Automotive Museum will be the next stop because it is across the street from the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. They probably have the biggest collection of classic cars in the whole country. They also have tons of automotive-related art pieces on exhibition. For food, I love Asian food, so I would drive down to the East Los Angeles area. A lot of good Asian restaurants are located there. I highly recommend Malibu or New Port Beach for good ocean scenery; I can walk down the beach all day to enjoy the perfect ocean view. Disneyland Park is the place to go for sure, it can bring back a lot of my childhood memories.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to thank my family, especially my father, Hong Yang, and my Mother, Shijie Yan. They are the person who always supports me on the path of pursuing my dream in the creative world.

Johnny E. Jensen. One of my favorite professors of all time. I have learned a lot from his class, especially many hands-on techniques as a cinematographer and Director of photography.
