Meet Haoyu Li | Architectural Designer/Visual Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Haoyu Li and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Haoyu, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Ever since I was a kid, I have had a deep passion for art and design. This interest led me to pursue a creative career, drawn by the platform it offers to share my unique perspectives through various media and approaches. What particularly appeals to me is the opportunity to break away from conventional rules and norms, allowing for genuine self-expression. The creative field has always attracted me, as I find immense joy and fulfillment in the process of bringing new ideas to life.
In addition, I believe artists and designers have the power to inspire and connect people. There are always individuals who resonate with your creative work and the thoughts behind the work, which I find incredibly motivating. Knowing that my designs can evoke emotions in others offers me a profound sense of satisfaction. This connection with my audience also drives me to continuously grow and improve as a designer.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Architectural design for me is not only about designing the spaces themselves but also about creating well-rounded and intimate experiences for the people inhabiting them through light, material, and the creation of visual identity. I am always passionate about diving deep into every project and attending to the tiniest details.
There also have been times when I felt uncertain about my future career and was unsure of the path to take. However, I realized that it is more important to focus on the aspects of design that truly inspire me and bring me joy. Embracing this idea has helped me to guide my career more confidently. By staying true to my passion and continually seeking opportunities for growth and learning, I am more equipped to overcome challenges and make meaningful contributions to the creative field.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are many excellent museums in Boston, each offering unique exhibitions and experiences to explore. I would say going to museums is definitely a good way to recharge and let go of the anxiety. Faro Cafe is another fantastic spot to unwind; its relaxed atmosphere and chill vibe make it a perfect place to grab a coffee and spend a leisurely afternoon.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I deeply appreciate my studio peers from college and our vibrant studio culture, where ideas are shared freely. I still recall the long days and nights of struggling with projects. During those challenging times, my peers offered diverse perspectives and insights that were both creatively and personally inspiring. I’m truly grateful for the chance to learn alongside such innovative and passionate individuals.
