We had the good fortune of connecting with Hashim Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Hashim, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
After working in the entertainment industry for over 25 years—primarily in the art department where I helped craft the visual identity of sets through construction, painting, and set dressing—I developed a deep understanding of how to create spaces that feel authentic, intentional, and lived-in. When the industry experienced a slowdown, I began reflecting on how I could apply those skills in a way that wasn’t dependent on working for someone else. I wanted to build something of my own—something that allowed me to continue creating, but with full autonomy. That’s what inspired me to start my own business: the desire to shape environments through design while establishing a more sustainable and independent path forward.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The inspiration behind what I create is deeply rooted in my background as an artist. Every piece I design carries with it the warmth and serenity we experience during a golden hour sunset—a moment that reminds us of life’s simple yet profound joys. At the heart of my work is the belief that our environment has a powerful impact on our sense of peace and well-being. My goal is to bring that same sense of beauty and sanctuary into people’s homes, creating spaces that uplift and inspire.

What truly sets my work apart is the personal nature of each creation. Every piece is custom-made to reflect the specific needs and desires of my clients. In a world where so much is mass-produced and automated, I take pride in offering something with genuine human touch and intention. My process is deeply hands-on—from selecting the wood to sculpting and finishing each piece with care.

One of the collections I’m most proud of is my live-edge wood sculpture series. I work with exotic woods, crafting pieces that range from tabletop accents to six-foot standing sculptures and wall-mounted installations. Often, I incorporate epoxy resin into my work, using custom pigments to create luminous, glass-like elements that flow with the natural patterns of the wood. My foundation as a painter has evolved into a sculptural practice that honors both material and form.

The journey to building this business was anything but easy. But it was deeply driven by passion, purpose, and perseverance. My 30 years of martial arts practice has been an invaluable guide—it’s taught me discipline, focus, and the courage to reinvent myself when necessary. Whenever I feel overwhelmed by the scale of a task or challenge, I remind myself to take that first step. Progress isn’t about perfection—it’s about staying present on the path and recognizing how far you’ve already come.

If there’s one thing I want the world to know about my brand, it’s that inspiration is one of the greatest forces we have. Mine comes from a deep desire to bring beauty, intention, and tranquility into the everyday spaces people call home.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
As a native Angeleno, one of my favorite ways to experience the city is by heading up or down the Pacific Coast Highway. Whether hiking scenic trails in the Santa Monica Mountains or simply relaxing on the sand, the coastline is the perfect place to reset and take in the natural beauty that defines Southern California.

We’d spend an afternoon wandering the lush grounds of the L.A. Arboretum—there’s something grounding about walking among those ancient trees. Then maybe catch a concert at the Hollywood Bowl, one of the most iconic venues in the world, and follow it up with a late-night bite in Thai Town—authentic, flavorful, and always buzzing with energy.

One night we’d go classic: dinner and drinks at Taylor’s Steakhouse, an old-school LA staple. For something truly unique, we’d dress up and spend the evening at the Magic Castle, where mystery and elegance collide in the most unexpected ways.

Of course, we’d cruise through Venice Beach to people-watch, check out the skate pool, and just soak in the beautiful chaos and creativity. Some of the most interesting people in LA are artists—whether visual artists, musicians, or practitioners of the healing arts. There’s a vibrant community here dedicated to self-cultivation and creative expression.

One of the most meaningful stops would be taking them to a Whipping Willow Association gathering, something I’ve been part of for years. It’s a long-standing community event—running for over 25 years—where people come together to train and exchange knowledge in various martial arts, from combative practices to restorative movement. It’s a rare and powerful blend of tradition, respect, and personal growth.

LA has its glitter, but it’s these deeper, soulful experiences that truly make it special

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
One of the most influential mentors in my journey was Ronn Davis at Design, Art, and Architecture—an institution once described by Rolling Stone magazine as one of LA’s best-kept secrets. Ronn had a unique ability to expand how you think. He was the person companies would turn to when they faced complex problems that needed truly creative solutions. Rather than giving answers, he would ask the kinds of questions that challenged you to see yourself—and your work—from entirely new perspectives. His guidance pushed me to evolve not just as a designer, but as a thinker and a human being.
