We had the good fortune of connecting with Heather Evans and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Heather, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Anything you do takes risk. I heard this quote once that says, “Faith is spelled R-I-S-K” and it stuck with me! You truly have to have BELIEVE in what you are doing and GO FOR IT.
For me this has played out in many different ways. I’m a Singer/Songwriter and I take risks on the daily. haha!! Anytime I dream up an album or have a crazy concept, think of a powerful visual for a music video, I have to risk a ton. Most of the time I am pretty confident in my abilities to make it happen, but there are sometimes it feels really daunting and heavy. You can’t just dream it up, you actually have to put legs to that dream and make it happen. You also have to risk financially and HOPE that the money you are investing into the project comes back to you.
For instance, I am working on a concept album called “Boxes”. I have a really huge vision for the project that is going to have 4 videos that will end up being a short film following a woman through “The System” or society as we know it. I am so thrilled and so terrified to be working on this, but I don’t know yet how I’m going to pay for and execute it.
I decided to work on one song at a time, and see how things unfold and pay for things as I go. It’s going to be such a labor of love and a powerful concept! You honestly just have to BELIEVE in yourself, put legs to it and the rest will follow!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started writing poetry when I was in 3rd grade. My teacher, Mrs. Price, saw a gift in me and entered one of my poems in a poetry contest! I was so encouraged by that as a young kid and kept writing into my teen years. I had journals and journals of poetry.
My family was super musical and always singing everywhere we went! We would finish each other’s sentences with a song that went with what the other person was saying. My mom played piano and we would sing around the piano in the evenings.
At the age of 12 I got a guitar, but quickly gave it up because it was too hard. My older sister Amy started playing it and I thought, well, if she can do it, I can too! I took my old journals of poetry and made them into songs.
Whenever I would finish a song, I would sit on the edge of my parents bed and show my dad. He was always the first person I would show them to!
At the age of 15, my dad got me studio time for my birthday so that he could listen to my songs in the car. The studio I was recording at loved my music, and I traded cleaning the studio for studio time! I finished a full length album by the age of 17.
The studio manager Rick Green was a wonderful supporter of my music. He helped me pitch my music for TV and Film opportunities and 2 of my songs landed on MTV’s Laguna Beach and Noggin’s South of Nowhere.
I figured out the format of how to get your music on TV Shows at a young age, and about 6 years ago, I really started to pursue that side of the Industry again.
I went to Conferences, took Classes online, started networking, and built a catalog of Broadcast Quality music that could be used in TV shows, Films and Ad’s.
I’m SO HAPPY I stuck with it because my music has been placed on: MTV, NBC, HULU, NETFLIX, NISSAN, Indie Films, FOX, ABC, DISNEY+, PBS, Podcasts, and MORE!
I now have the fantastic opportunity to coach and help other artists get their music on TV, Films and AD’s through my company DIY Sync Artist.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of my favorite spots in my city Columbus, Ohio is an incredible music and food venue called Natalie’s Grandview. It’s got such a good vibe completely geared towards music and they have the most delicious brick fired pizza. I always get the Margarita Pizza when I go!! On Saturday’s, they have a jazzy, big band type of band called the Whirlybirds play during happy hour and they are so good. It’s a perfect date night spot for sure.
I also love Rambling House! It’s another great music venue that has a killer open mic on Thursday’s hosted by Zach Whitney. I always discover someone new at that open mic and the regulars that play are fantastic. Their Moscow Mules are delicious as well! Highly recommend.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to my Family and Music Community for TRULY believing in me! My mom, dad, husband Brett, kids Story & Trust, Jamie, Alisha, Megan, Jason, Brian, and so many more have really been there on the journey with me in think and thin and I couldn’t have done all that I do without their support.
My parents specifically, believed in me at a young age and helped me record an album that ended up in Tv shows! They also taught me to work hard for your dream. I was out late working nights for their cleaning business saving up enough money to get a Gibson Songwriter guitar and I did it!
My husband Brett and Kids constantly encourage me in my big and small dreams and they are such a great cheer section in my life. There’s been times where I’ve wanted to give up and they have said “You can’t give up! You’ll just end up writing a song about quitting!”. I’m also glad my kids get to see me live an outside of the box career so that they know they can do it to.
My friend group has been so key for my growth and encouragement as well. They are all creatives and we all get each other so well. We’ve gone on music trips together and made tons of cool music and memories along the way. One of my friends made me a bracelet that says “I don’t fit in boxes” and it’s the lyric to my song Boxes and I wear it anytime I am walking into a scary situation.
Honestly, if I didn’t have my family and music/creative community, I don’t think I could do this long term. I am so grateful for their support and encouragement in my life and that I can truly be myself with them!
