We had the good fortune of connecting with Heesoo Chae and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Heesoo, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
Deciding whether to give up or keep going is truly a difficult dilemma. It is a moment of choice that can greatly impact your future life. I too have grappled with this issue for a long time, and I am still in the midst of that process. On this occasion, I would like to share the approaches that have helped me, along with my experiences.
First, it is necessary to examine whether the goal itself is important and achievable. If it is too difficult, there is a risk of giving up, but if it is too easy, it may lead to a lack of motivation. It is important to objectively assess your abilities and circumstances to set appropriate tasks.
Another approach is to utilize a sense of deficiency. People set goals for various reasons, but sometimes it stems from an inherent lack or sense of deficiency. While this deficiency may sound negative, it can actually be a source of aspiration and motivation for action.
It is advisable to combine these two approaches appropriately: Reflecting deeply on what you truly desire, and tackling tasks step-by-step in order of priority. This process enables self-exploration and helps resolve fundamental doubts about past choices when faced with difficulties.
Specifically, I believe it is important to gather as much information as possible before making a decision. For instance, when I wanted to become a 3D artist, I initially focused on gathering information due to my lack of relevant knowledge. I received a great deal of help through online resources, conferences, and advice from experienced artists. However, instead of solely relying on this gathered information, it is necessary to make judgments based on your own data and experiences. Ultimately, you are the expert on yourself.
Even after careful deliberation, the outcome may not always be satisfactory. However, I believe the process itself becomes a meaningful growth experience. While my opinion is not the definitive answer, this is something I often contemplate and reaffirm. I hope it provides a small inspiration as you discover your own answers.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Hello, it’s a pleasure to meet you. My name is Hee Soo Chae, and I’m a 3D generalist who also goes by the name Eva. Originally, my major was in fine arts and illustration. I learned the knowledge and skills in the 2D art field, such as anatomy, observational abilities, and realistic rendering techniques, have greatly benefited my 3D work.
To elaborate further, I perceive and feel a sisterly relationship between 2D and 3D arts. I love both disciplines and have been growing in a complementary manner. The anatomical knowledge and observational skills I honed through 2D work have enabled me to imbue 3D characters with lifelike movements and gestures. Additionally, understanding rendering principles has allowed me to adapt more easily to the 3D pipeline.
Currently, I am working at GIANTSTEP Studios located in Glendale. My strength lies in creating detailed 3D artworks based on my 2D artistic background. Recently, as a personal project, I undertook recreating the lead character Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games series in 3D. I put in a tremendous amount of effort to accurately depict the anatomical details and nuanced facial expressions. This project gave me an immense sense of accomplishment and pride.
Moving forward, my goal is to continuously create high-caliber 3D artworks that combine technical proficiency with artistic sensibilities. I plan to explore not just realistic representations but also delve into abstract, fantastical, and romantic styles across various genres. Through my work, I aspire to become an artist who conveys positive messages and values. Although there is still much room for growth, I will persistently hone my skills with passion. I hope potential audiences can find meaningful experiences through my artistic creations. I appreciate your continued interest and encouragement.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
While Los Angeles has so many amazing places, if you want to give your friends a truly special experience, I would highly recommend Joshua Tree National Park. Especially if the timing works out for sunset or overnight, try camping right in the middle of the desert. Of course, with a guide for safety.
Sitting quietly under that pitch-black desert sky free of light pollution, you’ll be met with an overwhelming expanse of the Milky Way. Not only is it an awe-inspiring sight, but realizing just how many stars are filling the sky above you can provoke a sense of wonder and enchantment.
As we get older, those “wow” moments become more infrequent. But there is still so much beauty in this world left for us to discover. And realizing that can fill you with the pure joy of a child once again.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Throughout my life, I have received a great deal of help and support from many people. Especially when starting my career as a 3D generalist, there was an experience where I received tremendous guidance. While studying illustration in New York, I was exposed to various 3D programs, which piqued my interest in 3D art. After graduating, I reached out via email to artists in LA, inquiring about the skills needed to become a 3D artist and the practical work involved. Although anxious and worried about being rejected or ignored, I was pleasantly surprised that many responded sincerely. With some of them, I made connections, leading to great opportunities like company and studio tours, portfolio reviews, and more.
Hearing their vivid stories and shared experiences was incredibly motivating for me. It became the driving force that allowed me to steadily grow as a 3D artist, even during the COVID era. I am forever grateful to them, and I hope that one day, I can extend the same kindness and support to those who need it.
