We had the good fortune of connecting with Heidy Gondola and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Heidy, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
When I was a teenager I didn’t have many nice things but I did have the most luxurious makeup thanks to my aunts working at Dior makeup counter!I fell in love with makeup and it was the only thing I was really good at. My friends would ask me to do their makeup to go to the mall and for prom and I loved every moment of it. I googled how to be a makeup artist when I was 13 year old, I was interested in how Makeup artist make money. This was in 2008 so times were much different than now. I knew I always wanted something fun with cool environments since I’ve always had a strong dislike towards boring or strict environments.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Peoples faces are my canvas. I can make an ordinary girl into the most beautiful and glamorous person in the room! Makeup is a part of your outfit and if your outfit is too simple.. jazz it up with hair & makeup!
I started from the bottom. My first job out of cosmetology school was the dry bar. I worked there for a month because I hated the mundane schedule of only doing blowouts back to back. I was so lost and had no idea on how I was going to become a pro makeup artist. I then started working at Blushington on sunset, it was a makeup salon and perfect job for beginners! I worked there for 8 months then got fired for being drunk on the job! this was 8 years ago and I definitely learned my lesson!
It has not been easy to get where I am today. The biggest lesson ive learned is to say hi and introduce yourself to creatives you are in the room with. I can’t tell you how many clients a stylist or a photographer has brought me clients just because of this!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love creating itineraries! When a friend is visiting I break down by areas. So my perfect day in Beverly Hills would be brunch at the Beverly Hills hotel then walk around the hotel and do some shopping followed by dinner at Il pastio then Wallys for wine!
following day a nice hike I prefer the more lowkey spots but since friend is in town we have to Runyon! smoothies /breakfast at Erewhon. After we shower go over to the grove for more shopping and sightseeing. Have coffee at Lala kind cafe, this is my favorite coffee in town. Walk down third street for some dessert at magnolia bakery. Then have dinner at Bacari!
my friends needs to see the beach. so we will head to Venice for the day! rent bikes and ride them down the boardwalk. after head over to abbot kinny. for dinner a perfect place is elephante!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t be this successful without the support of Lara C Kay. She is a celebrity hair stylist and salon owner and taught me the ropes of this business. Another person is my boyfriend Serdar Aydogan, he believed in my potential and gives me pep talks almost everyday of my life.
