We had the good fortune of connecting with HELEN WILSON and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi HELEN, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I wanted to be my own boss (or rather I didn’t want to have a boss) I like working WITH people rather than FOR people! I also wanted to be an artist so by designing a commercial and accessible product I could combine the two!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I design prints for ‘luxury’ wallpaper and fabric. What I think sets me aside is that all my designs are hand drawn and painted by me then digitally printed, I studied Fine Art in London UK so I approach design as art for the wall. I started my company Witch and Watchman in 2015 when I was living in London UK. I then chose to move to Berlin as it was cheaper and amazing and I was able to work on my business full time as unlike London it was affordable. It was pretty easy to get started as I found a manufacturer that could do small productions and had short lead times so i didn’t have to outlay a ton of money straight away, or tie up all my cash in stock. I’m most proud of figuring out that outsourcing as many aspects as possible to people who specialize in particular things is the way to ‘grow’ without having the stress of hiring and managing staff. It also helps that I’m a former graphic Designer so I can save a lot of money designing all the marketing materials myself. It very important to me that people know I studied fine art rather than Print design, I feel like my work stands out amongst other wallpaper designs because of this, I think of the original artwork as a painting it’s own right.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
So I would start with breakfast at the spoke cafe in Frog Town, a hike in griffith park, apple pie and coffee at the Trails Cafe then a walk around the shops on York in Highland Park then dinner at Joy on York and a drink at the highland park brewery. Next day would be breakfast at Kitchen Mouse on Figueroa, a walk in Debs Park, lunch at Charlies Taco Truck on York followed by Donuts from Donut Friend and a visit to Heritage square Museum to look at the victorian houses, then dinner at Jitlada in East Hollywood. Another day would be a drive all the way along Mullholland drive and dinner at Mels Dinner in West Hollywood plus a visit to Book Soup. Another day would be a drive through Topanga Canyon, lunch at the Topanga Living cafe. Another day would be a hike over to the old MASH set in Malibu followed by a drive down to the Malibu coast and Fish tacos at Neptune’s Net. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My Husband, he takes all the risks with his business and passes on to me what works and what doesn’t!
