Meet Hennie Roos | Skin and wound care research scientist, plastic surgeon

We had the good fortune of connecting with Hennie Roos and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Hennie, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I am a plastic surgeon by profession. Working as surgeon made me realise that in clinical practice, even though it is a highly satisfying profession, you can only earn while you work with your hands. A friend once used the analogy that if you compare arithmetic to the medical profession, you work with plusses. You cannot work with multiplication. I wanted to work with multiplication. The logic business direction to go into was related to plastic surgery. Working with wounds and cosmetic skincare products give me the satisfaction of my profession, without the need to earn a living by doing surgery.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Thoclor Labs, the manufacturer of Trifectiv Wound & Burn Care was founded in 2018. The development of the wound and burn care product that made the business possible started years before that, in 2011. After my introduction to the technology to manufacture the human immune molecule outside of the human body in a laboratory, I quickly realized that further development of the newly manufactured immune molecule needed to be done. I often think of Alexander Flemming who discovered penicillin when he noticed that bread mould killed bacteria. He spent the following two decades developing the method of manufacture to extract pure penicillin out of bread mould. In the same way, I realized that current manufacturing techniques had a shortcoming in that impurities and toxic molecules were manufactured with the “good” immune molecule. The medical application of the immune product required a definition of the pharmaceutical process of manufacture for this, which turned out to be a wonder cure for wounds. The years spent were extremely difficult, financially and in my personal life. Most of those close to me did not believe that I could make a success out of the development or the business, and those that did notice the potential, tried to steal the technology through elaborate schemes of “helping” me, and then claiming ownership of the technology. When the business became successful, competitors sprang up all over, still using the “bread mould” technology of manufacturing the immune molecule, but then telling all that they were the same as Thoclor Labs, but just much cheaper.

To distinguish ourselves from the competition, I decided to publish clinical case studies on Trifectiv Wound & Burn Care. So far, 7 peer-reviewed articles have appeared in the medical journals, detailing the application of Trifectiv as a safe and effective wound care product. I also developed treatment protocols and a training module teaching doctors the application of this new technology. This training is recognised by the medical authorities under the banner of Continuous Professional Development.

There are no shortcuts to building your brand and reputation. Be believe that our credibility in the market is not only dependant on good review, innovative approaches to social media exposure and good results with treating wounds, but in being passionate about our product and in helping our patients to restore their dignity. I am available 24/7 to assist patients and to advise health care providers and they appreciate our commitment to helping them heal others.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We will meet in Cape Town! Table Mountain is probably one of the ten most recognizable natural wonders and a visit up the mountain in a cable car for the most beautiful view of the city and the Atlantic Ocean. Then we will visit Stellenbosch, a picture-perfect small university town an hour outside of Cape Town, surrounded by some of the best wine estates that you can find. I will leave the wine tour to my friends at Camino Tours. They know the little jewels of hidden-away vineyards that will give wine tastings an extra dimension! An estate called Nobel Hill is my favourite. They have a fantastic restaurant overlooking the vineyards and their food is “DeVine”. South Africa is best known for its beautiful wildlife. Our next stop will be a private game lodge about two hours outside of Johannesburg. The Safari camp is called Mabula, and you are assured to see the “Big 5” (Lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino, and leopard) during a three day stay. We will do a game drive twice daily and you will be an expert in wildlife after listening to the expert guides on these treks. Of course, there will be more wine and some excellent South African cuisine on offer! When you are in the “bush” as we call it, African sunsets define all sunsets from there on. That, and the stillness of nature will provide long lasting memories!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I was introduced to immune therapy in wound care products when a guest to a wildlife ranch that I owned in South Africa (he was from Switzerland) told me about new technology that made it possible to manufacture the human body’s immune molecule. This molecule is under normal conditions made by our white blood cells (these cells provide us amongst others with a first line of defence against infection and injury). I became interested in this new field of medicine when my son, who was two years old at that time, got severely burnt with boiling water. I used a sample of the immune molecules to treat him, and I saw in disbelief how he completely healed, without any scarring, in a little more than a week. My experience as a surgeon told me that this was a 3-month injury that would probably end up with severe scarring! My son was my inspiration to develop a clean form of this product, that could be applied as a medical solution to previously difficult to treat conditions. Many years of research later, a clean medical grade of this “miracle molecule” now treats thousands of people with many different skin conditions, injuries and wounds.
