Meet Herbert Lewis | Multi-Hyphenated artist, Creative Director, Dj, Producer, Marketing Specialist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Herbert Lewis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Herbert, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I am from Atlanta, Ga and I believe the city and my family is what impacted who I am today. Being in what’s considered today Black Hollywood, there is so much richness in culture and music that you can’t ignore. From going to The Underground in downtown, being immersed in live music and art to jamming out with my grandmother in her car playing old school R&B hits. What’s unique about my upbringing as well is how diverse my families music selection is. Since my family is originally from New York my uncle was the first to introduce me to Nas and Method Man. My aunt was tapped into what considered popular Hiphop/R&B back when 50 cent dropped Get Rich Or Die Tryin to Monica After The storm. Last but not least my mother would always take me to this record store by my grandmothers house or any record store and just endlessly browse all of the CD’s, Source magazines, and Vibe magazines. My mother showed me everything with her endless amounts of CD books. From John Mayer to Pharrell and The Neptunes I was infatuated with music.
I never thought DJing in different states and countries would get me to where I am now. However this is only the beginning for my journey. I knew that music will always remain special in my heart and that I wanted to someday inspire the next generation as it has helped my upbringing. My mother has worked hard to raise me on her own to see me happy and take me places that no other kid in my neighborhood had a chance to experience. It could’ve been easy for me to follow the same path that my neighborhood had to offer and just be complacent with what was considered “cool” or “tough”. But my mother saw more for me and knew that my surroundings wasn’t going to be our reality. Fast forward to now I’ve had the opportunity to live in New Zealand, experience new cultures in different cities and create music

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
While Djing has been fun and I get to create the energy wherever I play music I wanted to elevate my creativity and start producing my own music to get the same reaction when I DJ but to my own music. I’ve released remixes on my SoundCloud of the style of music I enjoy and have enjoyed the process and seeing people’s reactions. So right now I am currently working on an instrumental project focusing on my journey as a producer and incapsulating the emotions I’ve dealt with this past year into the music. From Hip-Hop, R&B to House music, my goal for this instrumental project is for people to feel the emotions through each song and go on a journey with me.
I think so far this year I’m only just beginning my journey as a producer but so far taking risks has been the best choice I could’ve made for myself. I was known as this nice guy but also can be timid and shy because of this fear of failing. But now I have repurposed this idea of “failing” into lessons. It took me a while to realize this in any capacity but if I continue to not learn those lessons then I’m just someone who enjoys losing. So I’ve had to take the time to learn those lessons and figure out what I can do better next time as a creative and as a man.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take my best friend over to the Bay Area since that’s closer to me. I’d have him check out The MOMA since we’re both super into the art scene. Of course take him to twin peaks to check out the views and the end night having fun in the city bar hopping.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I just wanted to give a special shoutout to the people behind MasterPeace Studio, Anthony and Felicia Carter. I’ve lived on the west coast for the past 3 years going on 4 and it wasn’t easy at all. I’ve dealt with heartbreak, losing friends, and just simply having days where I didn’t feel inspired. However, this power couple has truly helped me get back on my feet to do the one thing I truly love to do and what brings me peace and that’s creating
