We had the good fortune of connecting with Hoda Hakimjavadi and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Hoda, what role has risk played in your life or career?
When I was at UCLA for my bachelors degree I initially wanted to pursue a career as a physician. The field of nutrition had not grown to what it is today. I stumbled across a book written on the impacts of nutrition and that is what lead me to pursue a career as a clinical dietitian. It was a big leap of faith, but looking back I am so grateful I took that risk and now practice in the field that I am most passionate about.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Working as a clinical dietitian at UCLA medical center is my dream job. I manifested working here over the many years that I would walk past the hospital coming and going to class while I was at UCLA for my undergraduate degree. I have the opportunity of helping others in their time of need. Working in the ICU is one of the most profound and humbling experiences I get to have every day. When I started at UCLA medical center 7 years ago I was definitely challenged with the work load and the intensity of it all. However I stayed on course and kept showing up every day determined to continue growing and learning in my role. I believe that determination is what helped me be a better dietitian today and I hope to improve day after day.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love food, so my tour would focus on a culinary experience with some scenic spots sprinkled in with some art/music and of course lots of physical activity as I do love to move. Must try food spots would be Jon and Vinny’s for pasta; Pizzana for pizza; and of course Petit Trois for some great French food.
For drinks and some beautiful views Elephante and 71 above.
For some beautiful art Getty Villa and quick stop at Nobu Malibu after for ocean front views.
For the most fun workout class SoulCycle and to top it all off a great live show at the Hollywood Bowl to experience music in an open atmosphere under the stars.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents! They are the reason why we moved to the states when I was 7 years old. I often wonder how different my life would be given the limited opportunities in my country of birth. They supported all my dreams and decisions and I am eternally grateful for their support.
