We had the good fortune of connecting with Hoi Lam Poon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Hoi Lam, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I grew up in a traditional Asian family where caution and being conservative were the norm. Pursuing a career in the arts was considered risky and unstable, in contrast to more popular and secure paths. Despite this cultural stigma, I was fortunate enough to have a family that supported my passion for art. Instead of choosing a stable but monotonous career, I opted for the uncertainty of pursuing my passion. For me, the risk was worth it because I believe it’s a blessing to have a hobby that you love and to be able to give back to it. While it may be challenging, it’s also exciting and fulfilling to explore the unknown and live life with a sense of purpose.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a Visual Development Artist, I am passionate about exploring various art forms, including publication illustration, children’s book illustration, and graphic design. Balancing my artistic pursuits with my professional work can be challenging, as art is not just a hobby, but also my livelihood. It’s easy to become disillusioned when facing mundane tasks that drain my energy and leave little room for creativity. Nonetheless, I am always open to new experiences and eager to expand my skills. I firmly believe that maintaining a positive outlook and being receptive to learning are key to overcoming the challenges that come with pursuing a career in the arts. Each new skill I acquire opens up new avenues for creative expression, making the journey all the more rewarding.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love the sunshine and the shore of Long Beach, and I would be happy to take my family and friends for a walk in Long Beach.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I feel immense gratitude towards my professors and classmates at ArtCenter College of Design. Studying at this institution has provided me with a platform to express my personal ideas and thoughts, thanks to the invaluable feedback and guidance from my peers and mentors. Through their insights and perspectives, I have gained a deeper understanding of the artistic world, broadened my knowledge, and sharpened my skills. I owe a great deal to my professors and friends for opening my eyes to new horizons and helping me grow as an artist.
