We had the good fortune of connecting with Hongzhou Wan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Hongzhou, why did you pursue a creative career?
I have a built-in tendency always to try and take on new things since I was little. I saw people doing repetitive work, and I found that terrifying. It becomes a natural pathway for me to get intimate with my practice and establish such a career thereafter.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a graphic designer. It deviates from art. I create purpose-driven design-looking for others. For each new project, I try to seek a unique method that might bring out the best potential of the outcome. This is what sets me apart from others. The method-shifting thinking can be risky and, sometimes, hard, but personally, it allows me to produce the things with real value that benefit both me and my client. Although there can’t be a singular answer to the obstacles I encountered, I tend to be patient, open to conversations, and always keep working. These actions helped me tackle the challenges.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Not likely after the Eaton Fire, but I could’ve taken them to the Eaton Canyon Trail for a friendly and brisk hike — it is popular for a reason. No specific place to drink since there are so many bars in LA, plus I am not an alcoholic. Apart from nature, I will take them to Highland Park Bowl, for you can both appreciate a cute old space and laugh at some imperfect strikes. Then, the Chongqing Special Noodles in San Gabriel is the place for dinner, they serve very authentic noodles originating from South West China.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to credit my mother for always supporting and believing in me, my friends who helped me settle down and build up a home away from home, and my mentors Jeffery Keedy and Stuart Smith, who guided me to sharpen my skills and put me in my place.
