We had the good fortune of connecting with Hortencia Aguirre and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hortencia, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I have always loved decorating my home with pretty arts and craft. At first things I purchased then mostly with things I created myself. My father liked my work so much he encouraged me and said “You should become an entrepreneur and sell your beautiful work. “
My father’s words became my inspiration and to this day they ring true and give me wings to create.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My ceramic art is the modern fusion of my classic Mexican and American heritage, religion, and culture.
I love to infuse my work with the beautiful vibrant colors and flora and fauna of Mexico and California.
The religious imagery of Mexico also plays a big part of my work.
As a child my family would visit Mexico for extended periods and the religious/folk art I would see left quite an impression on me.
Being a California girl I also embrace the hip cool chic modern motifs California is famous for into my work.
I guess you could call my work Mexican Folk California Modern Chic.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
On day one we would check out the sights of Hollywood. The Hollywood Walk of Fame, Mann’s Chinese Theater, then do some shopping on Rodeo drive and then we would enjoy the best Tacos in LA at King Taco in East LA.
Day two we would head to the beautiful Laguna Beach for a day of beach fun and then some shopping at the Fashion Island center in Newport Beach.
Dinner at the beautiful Las Brisas restaurant on the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
Day three we would head off to the desert town of Temecula and enjoy one of the many wineries. Then we would head over to the Glen Ivy Hot Springs to relax in a mineral bath.
Day four we would spend at LACMA the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and take in the incredible world famous collection of fine art from all over the world and enjoy a delicious steak dinner at the Dal Rae restaurant.
Day five we would head over to the Getty Museum and spend the day admiring even more incredible works of fine art and end the day with a hot dog at the world famous Pink’s Hot Dogs.
Day six we would take a boat out to the enchanted Catalina Island and spend the day shopping and exploring the many treasures hidden there.
Day seven we would spend the day shopping and exploring the wonderful Olvera Street and the nearby Chinatown.
Then we would catch an evening Los Angeles Dodgers game and end the night with a delicious French Dip roast beef sandwich from the world famous Phillipes near Dodger Stadium.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband Raul Aguirre jr . He himself is a professional artist . Raul has always been my mentor inspiration to create more He is always encouraging me to push my limits and create out of my comfort zone. I can trust him to give me an honest critique of my work every time. He spots things from his perspective that I sometimes miss and it helps me so much.
