Meet Hudson Mateus | Tattoo Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Hudson Mateus and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hudson, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I’m a Brazilian tattoo artist and I’ve been doing this professionally for 12 years. In my country I had already conquered my clientele and been recognized as an artist. Risking myself in a new country, in a new culture was to completely leave the comfort zone. I could imagine that it wouldn’t be easy but I knew that this would be very important for my career and would make me a better artist.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The tattoo style that I do is known as American traditional / old school but I try not to get attached to it, I try to create my own style and provide my clients with authentic and quality work. I believe that with the years of experience I have seen that often art is not about who has more awards, followers, a full schedule. Its about to see the client leaving the shop truly satisfied with a great and exclusive work.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of the most exciting things for me is to find out about the culture and gastronomy of a place. I consider myself a daytime person so my indications are focused on that.
– About art I recommend visiting the LACMA and The Broad art museums, both in Los Angeles. I also recommend an outdoor walk in the botanical gardens and museum of the Huntington Library in Pasadena.
– For a beautiful sunny day I have to mention Manhatam Beach, to enjoy the day by the sea and have a good time in the city.
– For those looking for good food, I recommend visiting the Original Farmers Market. There is this old and classic atmosphere that pleases everyone. Whenever I go there I get lost in the many options of pies, sweets and sandwiches but I mainly recommend the Brazilian restaurant Pampas that reminds me of my home.
– I’m passionate about burgers, my favorite burger spots are For The Win, the Win-Dow and my favorite place of Los Angeles is a classic burger restaurant called Cassell’s.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shoutout all my friends that the tattoo has brought me over these years. I know that art is often about ego but for me the tattoo culture teaches us about humility, respect and companionship. It is a very beautiful art that is passed from person to person. My friends taught me not only how to handle a machine, I also learned to be a better human being.
