We had the good fortune of connecting with Hugo Wu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hugo, what inspires you?
My work is inspired by many artists in the field of moving image media, as I aim to connect with a broad audience. On a more personal level, I draw inspiration from nostalgic childhood memories and natural scenery. This allows me to infuse my pieces with a sense of wonder and familiarity. By blending influences from established artists with my own intimate inspirations, I strive to create moving image works that feel both professionally crafted and emotionally resonant.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is deeply inspired by visions from my childhood imagination and a desire to capture fleeting moments of self-realization. I utilize emerging technologies like 3D motion design and virtual production to bring these inner worlds to life. What sets me apart is my experimental approach and commitment to innovation – I’m always looking for new ways to immerse viewers and evoke emotional responses.
I’m most proud of my recent film, Spirit Dive, which excavates memories of inspiration and transformation. Creating it allowed me to reconnect with the unfiltered creativity I had as a child. That sense of wonder is what drives me as an artist.
It hasn’t always been an easy journey. Early on, I struggled to choose the one theme that could represent most of my story and emotion. It took quite a while for me to rethink my life experiences and distill the key inspirations for my art. I went through many failed experiments and projects that never came to fruition before landing on the concept for Spirit Dive. By reflecting deeply on my childhood dreams and visions, I was finally able to capture an emotive theme that resonated.
What I want viewers to know is that my art is an invitation to reflect on their own dormant dreams and embrace their inner child. There is something wild and untamed in all of us, if we just take the time to rediscover it. My goal is to create emotive experiences that help people connect with their true selves.
I’m excited to see where this journey takes me next. I hope to continue honing my craft and pushing creative boundaries. Most importantly, I want my art to move people – to evoke a sense of childlike wonder, inspiration, and the beauty of self-discovery.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a huge shoutout to XK Studio! This amazing art studio has been an essential pillar of support and inspiration throughout my creative career. In my early days as an emerging artist, I looked to XK as an idol and guiding light.
