We had the good fortune of connecting with Ian Melamed and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ian, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
I don’t know, I mean – I’m sure there are a lot of habits I have that I just kind of take for granted; that are invisible to me. I think if I had to point to one thing that has helped me it’s that I have pretty good impulse control. When faced with a problem that triggers a stress response I don’t lash out instantly. I take time to process, and respond rather than just reacting.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think what sets me apart from others is that I don’t try to be someone I’m not. That’s not to say that I’m brimming with self confidence. For years I tried to fit the mold of what I thought people wanted me to be, but the task of trying to make other people accept you is exhausting at best and Sisyphean at worst. Even so, I still slip back into those behaviors from time to time, but I think things have worked out best for me when I adopt an attitude of reckless abandon to the art I make.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ahhh, a week is a long time. I’m pretty introverted so I’m not sure I could spend a whole week with anybody 24/7, haha. I mean, if it’s a friend I’d like to spend some time actually talking with them. Probably walking along the Hudson, or going to a few coffee shops in the East Village. I don’t know… maybe go to an Icelandic punk show?
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Uhhhh, probably my parents. Seriously they’ve been incredibly supportive, and patient with me as I try to get my career off the ground. I’m really lucky to have them in my corner because they’re two of the smartest and most insightful people I know. I definitely owe them a huge debt of gratitude.
